A pair of new front wings were added and the panels then fitted for alignment ready for paint

Colour choice was something of a contentious decision. It was defiantly a love it or hate it colour. It was painted in Renault Gun Metal grey which was found mostly on the R5GTT and R19 16v of the early 90's. This was complimented with a Matt finish lacquer for an aggressive look...

As can be seen a set of Inovit Redlines were added. 18" was quite a tight fit though so some suspension would be required to run correctly

So here was the car in the Matt grey finish....
http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...99A93DABEC.jpg The problem was, there was something missing from the car and I couldn't put my finger on it at first, it played on my mind for ages and then it hit me, the one thing missing, was.....SHINE..! So after a long deliberation the decision was taken to respray the body, AGAIN, only 6 weeks after it had been done.... Let's hope it looks better 2nd time round |

http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...6CEB34B1DE.jpg Luckily the 2nd choice of colour was also grey so it had a really good ground coat. This time round I went back to a Subaru colour and went for Blue Steel as found on the special edition RB5 model. And as I'd hoped the car looked amazing after... http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...4D2D3E3101.jpg http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...79AD974FC3.jpg http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...66DAE701D2.jpg http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...79A5313D1C.jpg http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...E12920461B.jpg |
I'm unsure on the no roof rails ? Was they easy to remove ?
|
With the end of March 2014 approaching and the car on a club stand at The Fast Show, Santa Pod, something extra was neede to really make the car stand out, so the gold wheels got the chop, and the red engine bay flexed some muscle and made the decision easy. So candy red stretched to the wheels too...
http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...E337F7018E.jpg http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...2FD472F231.jpg http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...8224BA9BF8.jpg http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...A8C6094D9D.jpg And as we were at Santa Pod, it was a given that the car was gonna run, and a new best time was set at 13.8, and the car is still not mapped properly on the rollers, it only has the reflash chip fitted http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...B82E543EA3.jpg |

The roof rails were easy to remove, they just unbolt from the outside but the problem is that they leave gaps in the moulding behind. You can either use tape to cover them up or fit a whole new set of roof trims from another model
Like the wheels |
Now that the exterior is well underway (not finished, a project car is never finished) attention turned towards improving the performance if the car.
As said previously the car had already been fitted with the decat, full 3" straight through exhaust system and a td05 top entry turbo. An esl daughterboard was sourced as well as a set of yellow 440 injectors. The fuel pump was uprated to a 255lph version too. A larger newage top mount intercooler was always the original plan but a front mount and pipe work kit came up at an offer that couldn't be refused. A newer map sensor from a v5 model was also fitted to raise the boost a little more. Once all fitted the car was road mapped by Duncan from Race Dynamix before going to Surrey Rolling Road a few weeks later for a few minor tweaks and power run. The car made 306.9bhp and 310lbft torque. http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...EA2B6114B2.jpg http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...A4A524B1C1.jpg |
The engine bay has also been tidied up with a few candy red pieces added, chromed fluid caps (the yellow caps are nasty) and the air filter repositioned for cooler air flow. A heat shield was also made up to reduce the amount of hot air circulating the air filter.
Because of the new position of the filter, when running the car at Santa Pod the headlamp can now be removed to add cold airflow into the system. http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...6DB78DA568.jpg http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...0BA84F2FAF.jpg |
Small touches added to the car over the year include:
Tinted glass all round Carbon dipped bonnet vents and fog covers http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...5825C9478D.jpg http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...8CEAA6948A.jpg Fly-eye headlamp film http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...11CA7368D8.jpg http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...5DE14D00D1.jpg Candy red carbon interior trims http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...B375EAB0E8.jpg http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...98ADF5D7C9.jpg |
Most recently the car was invited to Trax at Silverstone as a guest of a small local club and appeared on the club stand of the FlatLine Cruisers
http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...44B9A38E_1.jpg http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...442B12A7F0.jpg http://i1058.photobucket.com/albums/...64E3886AEC.jpg |
There's a couple of things not mentioned so far. The interior, it has been fully stripped out and is only occupied by the dash, front door cards and 2 Corbeau Forza race seats. All the trims, headlining, carpet and sound deadening have been removed. Even the ac system is gone.
There is a very good reason for this. The car is used in the RWYB challenge at Santa Pod. http://www.rwyb.co.uk/cc_introduction.php Times have been dropping over the course of the year and having started initially at 14.4 secs late last year the current best time is down to 12.9 secs. Currently sitting 6th in the table among some pretty tasty machines http://www.rwyb.co.uk/cc_results2014challenge.php Let's hope it can be bettered next time out on 27th Sept. In the meantime the gearbox is being changed as it developed a whine from the bearings which could be worrying considering the car has heavy launches of the line |
