Be careful, a lot of emails from hmrc are fake and scammers are After your bank details!

scoobeenut 29 November 2012 05:55 PM

HaHa they just need your bank account details and sort code :lol1:

pslewis 29 November 2012 06:28 PM

They needed my Bank Details to pay the money in ....... that's just business.

I found it a little odd that they wanted my Credit Card details and 3 numbers on the back to verify who I was - but, being the Government, it should be OK?

Just me!!!!

RobsyUK 29 November 2012 10:51 PM

Ask this Q.. Where did the inland revenue get your email? I'd phone and ask them to confirm. If it is a scam they may want the email

pslewis 30 November 2012 08:35 AM

I suppose they got my e-mail from their database?

Phaeton 30 November 2012 08:42 AM

I fill in self assessments on-line, they have my email address from there, however my son has just received a cheque in the post. I would be looking at the headers of the email closely, but I would have thought they would be genuine IF you have communicated with them before via email, but if you haven't!!

Another e-mail from HMRC:-

Our specialist team will look into your submission and take the necessary action. We cannot always inform you of the outcome of these investigations but we do act on each submission we get.

Please be aware that HMRC does not use email to contact people about being eligible for a repayment or to ask personal information or payment.

If you are concerned that after receiving a HMRC related scam email you have:
• disclosed personal information (such as password/user ID);
• disclosed credit/debit card information; or
• reason to believe your computer has been exposed to a virus

please forward a report to us at security.custcon@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk so that we can look into it. If you disclosed credit/debit card information you need to immediately report the matter to your bank/card issuer."
