Hi,

WRX STi Spec D 07/07 25k miles

I'm wanting to change my engine oil and filter soon, but how much from empty will it need?

4.5 litres? remembering that the oil filter will be empty too of course.

I would also like some advice on what make / grade of oil to use. I'm running Shell Ultra AG 5W 30 at the moment.

Also, would there really be any gain in getting an STi sports / performance oil filter seen here, or is a standard black filter as good as?

Never used Millers oil before, any good do you know?

That's a really good offer, cheaper than Opie and Opie don't offer the filter.

I've just serviced MY07 RB & used Millers CFS 5w 40 NT, but I use the K&N oil filter.

That Scoobyparts offer is very good though!

Its one of the best oils about. Might be worth having a word them to see if they stock Millers 5w-40. I use the 10w-40 but mines a classic
Yes the scoobyparts deal is spot on, Genuine subaru black filter (better than the blue type) and sump washer as well:thumb:

Halfords had an offer on 4ltrs of Castrol magnatec fully synthetic for £19

Millers recommend the following oil for your car - either XF longlife C2 5w/30 or XF longlife C3 5w/30

At Demonoils, these are £34.44 for a 5 litre tub.

Or if you must use OPIE, then they will charge £40.93 for C2 and £43.20 for C3!!!

i thought c2 and c3 spec oils were for diesels ???

Funny when i rang millers technical for a hawk they said
Cfs 10w40 for normal road use
Cfs 10w50 for fast road use
Cfs 10w60 for track only
all fully synethic

Basically you want a fully Synth Ester based oil. 10/50 seems like a commonly used grade, RCM (who know a thing or two about Scoobs) actually use 15/50 as do APi. I use this grade in my quite heavily modified Hawk

I would steer clear of 5w - I'll get flamed for that as Subaru UK recommend it, but several specialists (who build have rebuilt more of these engines than we've had hot dinners) say it's not optimal for Scoobs!

Nothing wrong with 5w oils in subaru's, its 0w thats not recommended, so anything from a 5w30-5w40-10w40-10w50, 15w50 is good in summer but not that good in winter with a cold weight of 15 :(

For 15W-50 Id be looking at Silkolene/Fuchs Pro, or Gulf Racing synthetic, with Motul 6100 a cheaper alternative. The Silkolene is better in my opinion and its an ester synthetic (better than a PAO synthetic). It costs more though, obviously.

Irrespective of the cold viscosity rating, Id be looking for as high a a second number as possible and definitely higher than 30! 50 would be more like it in a hot turbocharged engine.

Millers and Fuchs both make excellent oils, as do Motul and Gulf (competition). Castrol 'Magnatec' synthetic products Id give a wide berth to, as they seem to generate more black sludge than a 1980s Ford CVH engine!

15W-50 is a little too runny for my 944 Turbo, which Im probably about to fill with 20W-50...

Sorry Tony I have to disagree there. We see as many failed engines per month as probably anybody in the UK. Our data indicates that the ones that fail are 80% or more on 0W and 5W.

There is no reason not to put in 10W or 15W on a cost basis and the potential risk of using an alternative oil such as 0W or 5W, that is known can break a Subaru engine, is too high.

0W and 5W also tend to encourage oil consumption. We have a customer abroad who was complaining of high oil consumption on a fresh APi high performance engine. Once we discovered he was doing his own servicing using 5W we advised him to change to 10W or 15W. Which he did.

HEY PRESTO ! oil consumption fixed.

So our recommendation, despite the wording in the UK Subaru service books; Use 10W or 15W 40 or 50 fully or semi and you have done everything you can to help your engine.

Simple really. He should go with the advice of the guy who builds these engines! :D The specialists on these cars will generally say: 10/50 15/50 fully synth, preferably ester based.

So if 80% of people use 0W or 5W and 20% use 10W and you are only seeing failed engines, then it is not surprising that 80% use 0W or 5W and the other 20% use 10W and above :wonder:

David is saying 80% of the engines that fail are on 0/5W, not that 80% of owners use 0/5W.

Just had my car serviced at RCM, excellent place by the way, and they used Castrol 10/60 Edge.

So....if you have an ester based oil (say for example 10w40)..... Is there much difference between brands?? If they use the same 'high end ester technology' then surely even a cheaper alternative ester oil would be a safe bet....
Can you mix brands without any detrimental effects?

Motul 300 15/50...although next time I am going with Gulf Competition 15/50 as Motul have lost the fooking plot on pricing ! Gulf on paper is just as good and you can buy 5litres not 6 and nearly half the price !!
