LPG on a high powered STI

I have been trying to get some answers and quotes for an LPG installation for a hawkeye STI (forged and running high 300bhp)
the only answer i got was

'My advice would be don't do it . Valve problems are likely on the sti and it's got bucket shims which means you can't adjust the valve clearances '

I would really want this to be fitted, as it will be beneficial to me.

Can someone advise me anymore? as I have seen some people have made the installation.
Also any good reliable fitters in South yorkshire?

if you cant afford the petrol sell the car.

Speak to Jura, I'm sure he had a LPG conversion done a while back.

Ignore this. Some good info in the threads below. Simon JGM and Bob Rawle both have either mapped or considered this conversion. Maybe an idea to drop them a pm.

Hi there

We are run LPG for while(10k miles) on our wagon,we are run around 350bhp

At around 300-350bhp you will need bigger LPG injectors, bigger vaporizer. For under 300bhp you should be OK like with off-shelf systems like AC-Stag or BRC,Lovato etc

I would recommend put there Flash Lube kit, electronic or mechanical kit,all depends on the budget

"'My advice would be don't do it . Valve problems are likely on the sti and it's got bucket shims which means you can't adjust the valve clearances"

As Jura says, the flash lube systems stop valve regression, so this isnt a problem if you buy a decent system.

As for capacity, you dont need to have an lpg system that supports the full power of the engine! As the better systems can seemlessly swap from lpg to petrol when needed, so you can run LPG 95% of the time, and the system automatically switches to petrol for the full capability of your engine.

If you do want to have an LPG system that works right up to the 300bhp, then youd have to start doubling up on injectors, pumps, and all other shenanigans, so therefore doubles the price.

Im no expert because i havent done it .... but ive definately considered it! :-)

fawor 06 August 2012 05:18 PM

i done it, my is 2003 wrx ppp ,not sure about 2.5 litre sti
around 900 now for ac stag system ,but better injectors and vaporiser up to 400bhp(good to 350bhp proved ) additional 200 quid.
system for 350 bhp should cost 1100 quid
2 years withouth flashlube we see how long yet:norty:
on my area is porsche cayenne-4.5 years on lpg :thumb:

wwp8 06 August 2012 08:50 PM

Can these handle 360-370 horses?

'you will need bigger LPG injectors, bigger vaporizer'

How big? what type? It's not the same as modding a car.. ie pink inkjectors or walbro fuel pump, which is easier to understand. :(

Searching on here, it seems everyone fitted their own kit?

I don't suppose anyone knows an installer near Sheffield (or maybe south yorkshire) that knows what they're on about, rather than, we're the best, we fit the best, they're rubbish etc. *yawn*

A couple of companies that sounds ok.

http://www.go-lpg.co.uk/
http://www.hytekautogas.co.uk/ (with a half broken site)
http://www.cotcomp.com/ (seems to be specialising at Subaru's?)
Also found http://www.autoservicesdoncaster.co.uk/(uses BRC system) who was sent from http://www.greenfuel.org.uk/
They are arranging a call back, when i sent them a humongous email with questions..*strange*

Anyone experienced any of these?

madmarx 06 August 2012 09:31 PM

Do what we do, we bought a Punto 1.2 with full Mot, 6 months tax for 450. Run around local in a small car and keep 99 octane in the Scooby. Cant see why you would want to own a high powered sports saloon then try and run it on the cheap.

wwp8 06 August 2012 09:53 PM

actually i take back the option of go-lpg

due to these

It's going to be my daily runner and I can't have another car.
I originally was going to go soft and buy a diesel and get rid of the scoob.
But some people says diesels are less fun, and the suggestion of LPG came up, as I work in the city, I can register the car that it is converted to LPG and can use the council's car parks for free

jura11 06 August 2012 10:28 PM

Hi there

As I said if you want run bigger power would suggest some companies which doing conversion with right systems as Vialle,Prins VIS LPG System or Romano(not sure if they're available here)

Injectors are usually used Matrix LPG or Keihin.

If as previously commented if you can have it so gentle driving back and fore to work the car runs on LPG. But then switches to petrol when you get on boost seems the best of both. I am deffo going to keep an eye on this as may consider it for both my scooby but deffo the bus.

Why not lpg. 10% less power its not bad option, the same handling ,burble, look, some of you use 95 octane petrol others use methanol, why everybody dont use meth -more power. Whats better 350hp scoob on 95 or on 99 or with 10% meth or 20%meth or on lpg.
Some has 2 or more maps, why they drive with 300hp if they could drive with 380 for example.why you buy solid disc not performance friction or why everyone of you dont drive litchfield type 25- simple -money.
I prefer drive my scoob everyday and can push it anytime using 240bh,not drive like pussy pushing my toy only on weekends.

I emailed Bob who originally mapped the car and he advised
consider an LPG system that links into the car with the turbo only running on actuator pressure and I can have 2 maps, one at actuator pressure and the other at full whack.
Sounds good, need to know who can do that.

I love the way people recommend buying a second car. Cost of car, insurance, tax, maintenance, petrol. It works out more expensive to run two cars than lpg 1

wwp8 07 August 2012 09:52 PM

I've contacted cotcomp and they are developing a flashlube alternative, it produces mists rather than drips, which sounds interesting.

Alan MaC 07 August 2012 10:50 PM

The Scooby Garage I use has tons of work (to put them right) from Scoobs that have LPG Conversions that end in tears.

the various Scooby Mechanics I have met there say dont do it.

Valves get shagged & it costs a fortune to put right.

Good luck.

You asked for advice, dont do it.

Subaru offered LPG on the outback a few years as an extra

I persnally wouldn't do it to my Scoob but have read posts where they run without issues but also read about them nackering up

Try it and if breaks then a big lesson learnt
If all goes well then its a bonus

Also am right in thinking this conversion will cost in the region of £2k+ is this a figure you would spend on v power in the rest of years of ownership , also bearing in mind lpg is going up in price like diesel went up bk in day

I loved Lpg in my old Bmw but they love the conversion and was only 56p a litre then

Stag 300 will cost max1100 with best injectors and vaporizer. Paid back after 11k miles
now lpg cost 72p versus tesco 99 139p or vpower no idea dont need it :)

Stevesbluewrx 08 August 2012 09:09 PM

I'm baffled by all this converting to the likes of LPG?

I use my car everyday still , you just need to be handy with the right foot for everyday use and enjoy the car more at weekends or spirited drives.

Just my view may I add.

To Elaborate a bit more, me and our lass both drive the Punto as a third car and share the running costs. As for maintenance i am an ex car mechanic, so there are no garage fees for us, only parts cost. Its also used for supermarket trips, runs to the tip etc, or for eg to leave somewhere overnight, and it returns around 40mpg+ week in week out.

Subaru offered outback with lpg on non turbo cars as far as i know, softer valve seats thats the problem. Wrx and sti are ok hard enough.

The Trooper 1815 09 August 2012 12:25 PM

I sold my 330/330 Litchfield MY04 2.5l Foggy STi and the guy had it converted to LPG. It then did over 20k in less than twelve months without a problem, it was sold on and is still running strong. Last seen around the Shrewsbury area.

The kit took a bit of setting up but I know he paid top money and it's went like a dream. He had a Romano kit with the extra lube stuff.
