Does anyone know how easy it is to locate and replace an ECU on a UK MY99. Ecutek can supply a re-mapped Subaru ECU. Instructions or links for advice would be useful...

Passenger footwell, under carpet.
Get yourself a 10mm socket, extension and ratchet to take the screws out. Remove 3 plugs, Bobs your aunties uncle. A :) |
Sounds easy...too easy in fact...
...3 plugs, what might they be (without looking) ?? Do you need an EPROM Removal tool ? Can you damage the pins on the chip(s)? Cheers, MKC |
It's a piece of pi$$ m8. It's located in the passenger footwell. Just undo the couple of clips holding the carpet in-place, then pull it back (the plastic kick plate on the left will pull back to allow the carpet to get out of the way).
Then undo the metal cover with a 10mm socket (watch your fingers as its razor sharp). You'll find the original ECU; it's then a 2min job to swap them over. I've got some pics @ home, so I'll post them later. Stefan |
If Ecutek only supply a replacement chip, then yes you will need a chip extractor, otherwise you only need to remove the complete ECU with casing (as described above)

You need to type faster? ;) beat me to it......:D ;) :)

Thanks for that...
will be good to see the pics... cheers for now, MKC... |
Good point...(I need to type faster, missed the last reply).
I will ask ECUTEK if its a chip or whole ECU... Ta once more...MKC |
AFAIK, they send the complete thing. They re-use other original ECU's, so that's why you need to send them your original although you can pay extra and keep it.

Appears to be 150 exchange with 300 surcharge...
Money back satisfaction guarentee !! (Sounds good). Sending the original back recorded delivery is probably a good idea... Ta... |
Yep, you don't want to loose one. Also, it's worth asking them how much is covered with recorded mail - just incase it does get lost and you need to buy a new one.

Good point...just checked and its a 27 quid compensation limit...just about cover the first hours largers when I find out its lost in the post !! Special Delivery is 20 quid and covers up to 250 pounds in compensation...(may as well drive it there myself)...cheers for the note.

remember the nut underneath the loom........(bottom pic)

Good point. Couldn't remember if there was one there after taking the pic .... and couldn't be @rsed lifting the carpet again :)
Stefan |
yeah and watch your fingers as some of them bits of metal are ****1ng sharp!

Pics saved and torque wrench ready...
Cheers for providing these, sure they will be useful to others. I will feedback results from the ECUTEK ECU swap when done... Thanks again, MKC |
Need to type faster :)
No, there's no eeprom programmer needed. It's not just a single ECU chip, but a complete PCB in a metal enclosure. You just undo the 3 plugs and once the new one's in-place, put the 3 plugs back. The pics will reveal all. Stefan [Edited by ozzy - 5/7/2002 6:21:21 PM] |
OK, here's the pics. Arrows show the 3 plastic clips holding the carpet in-place. I've circled any bolts that'll need undoing.

Stefan NB. Mine's fitted with a lovely Prodrive ECU :), but yours will probably be a brown AE801 ECU. [Edited by ozzy - 5/7/2002 7:53:10 PM] [Edited by ozzy - 5/8/2002 12:24:47 AM] |
