Mobile speed camera van query ?
Hi guys
I was driving out on a country road today and came across x3 driving miss Daisy's all close together so I overtook them only after the manoeuvre did I spot the Mobile speed camera van on the opposite side of the road ! The query I have is? when I overtook the cars this van was facing me and when I pulled back in and past the van i noticed the big blacked out window to the rear of the van, so do the cameras work both ways or would he scanning traffic coming from the opposite direction facing the blacked out window ???? |

speed camera
i think you have 2 be driving towards the rear of the van for them to get a reading due to the laser time and distance travelling towards it,i dont think it works if you are driving away from it but i mite be wrong!
|
im in the same boat , though i was driving towards it at 45 in a 40 , does it give a bit of leeway with the limit ?

speed camera
charlyscunkweed, it does give leeway, the camera van has to take into consideration tyre depth speedo calibration which can alter your speedo reeding's,you mite be lucky?

My old mans a traffic cop an they give 3mph lee way.
I like to think there is still an element of common sense applied to these vans. ie If you are drving like a plonker you are more likely to get done. Either that, or they were on their tea breaks each time. Obviously, it's not something I rely on though. |
I know of people both traveling towards and away from the vans, both got caught and fined. But saying that about 6 weeks ago i was traveling towards a van going 40mph in a 30. Never heard anything back from it so maybe I just got lucky?
|
How soon is it before you get a notice through ?
I'm hoping he was just about to pack up cos it was 19.15pm when I overtook the cars . |
Happened to me and i asked the nice lady, she said only from the back of the van..... We will see.
|
They aren't always speed cameras, sometimes they read number plates for offenders of no tax or mot or no insurance etc, so it could have been one of them vans.
|
Please god Iet me off this once and I promise never to speed again !! Well again this month lol

After this date, core sites were agreed by the board of directors of the Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland Road Safety Partnership. Community Concern Sites Community concern sites are locations that have been highlighted to us by the public because of concerns about excessive speed of traffic. The Safety Camera Scheme monitors the site and checks if there have been any collisions in the previous 3 years. Where evidence of a significant speeding problem is found, our mobile camera enforcement vans can be deployed to address the problem. We also check the collision history of each site we investigate for speeds and most of the community concern sites have had at least 1 injury collision in the last 3 years. Found this and thought I'd share so others don't get caught like me ! |
There's always a silver transit hanging around my neck of the woods, I spotted it today and it had 2 cameras in the front window, normally has one pointing out the back and I'm sure it has one on the roof too.
|
This was a plain white van with Police on the bonnet

I thought you had to be driving towards the of the van with the camera facing you, that's how my dad got done 2years ago. So I'm pretty sure you will be fine mate.
|
As far as im aware they dont have a radar gun in the front as this would require 2 operators, however the rear laser could have gotten you as all modern laser devices will work either way.
you may be lucky as you may have taken him by surprise or he may have seen you were just overtaking some sunday drivers, all depends on how fast you were going and if he was a oxygen thief or not |
FWIW if you were making progress passed slower moving traffic your allowed to exceed the speedlimit to do so but must return to the to the limit within a 1/4 mile
|
i got caught doing 35 in a 30 come around a long bend and mobile van, clean licence for 9 yrs and i get caught in a work van! think i can do the course as its my first time and avoid the points, just waiting for the paperwork to arrive at mine
|
All fingers and toes crossed , I will keep you updated 😉
|
Laser camera vans work in both directions, so can pick you off on both carriageways. They can work upto 1000metres but generally are used upto 400metres.
The nip must be served within 14 days from the date of alleged offence. You can request a photo to help in identifying the driver. |

Came up behind a 300 year old man doing 40 in a 50, I accelerated past him and hit 55 before quickly backing off back to 50. 2 weeks later got letter through door, prosecuted for doing 55 in a 50. I didn't even see the van but must of been a plain one as the picture clearly showed me and the old Cnut I overtook. |

How can he ask for a picture to identify the driver, if he was driving away from the van. It would not prove how was driving the car mate.
|
Got snapped by one recently,(coming off a dual carriageway)notice of intention to prosecute came through in three days.Got offered speed awareness course and took that option,so a morning off work and £90 lighter but no points. We just have to be careful where we choose to enjoy the performance these cars offer.
