Mobile speed camera van query ?
Hi guys
I was driving out on a country road today and came across x3 driving miss Daisy's all close together so I overtook them
only after the manoeuvre did I spot the Mobile speed camera van on the opposite side of the road !
The query I have is? when I overtook the cars this van was facing me and when I pulled back in and past the van i noticed the big blacked out window to the rear of the van, so do the cameras work both ways or would he scanning traffic coming from the opposite direction facing the blacked out window ????

speed camera
i think you have 2 be driving towards the rear of the van for them to get a reading due to the laser time and distance travelling towards it,i dont think it works if you are driving away from it but i mite be wrong!

I have passed two of these vans on dual carriageways with 70 limits at 86 (on satnav 95ish on speedo) with no adverse feedback. I have to say they were both instances where I was driving to the conditions and the speed had crept up.
I like to think there is still an element of common sense applied to these vans. ie If you are drving like a plonker you are more likely to get done.
Either that, or they were on their tea breaks each time.
Obviously, it's not something I rely on though.

I know of people both traveling towards and away from the vans, both got caught and fined. But saying that about 6 weeks ago i was traveling towards a van going 40mph in a 30. Never heard anything back from it so maybe I just got lucky?

We also check the collision history of each site we investigate for speeds and most of the community concern sites have had at least 1 injury collision in the last 3 years.

As far as im aware they dont have a radar gun in the front as this would require 2 operators, however the rear laser could have gotten you as all modern laser devices will work either way.
you may be lucky as you may have taken him by surprise or he may have seen you were just overtaking some sunday drivers, all depends on how fast you were going and if he was a oxygen thief or not

Laser camera vans work in both directions, so can pick you off on both carriageways. They can work upto 1000metres but generally are used upto 400metres.
The nip must be served within 14 days from the date of alleged offence.
You can request a photo to help in identifying the driver.

Unlike me - both roads are pretty much adjacent to where I live.
EDIT: Fail! Just noticed the dates. Vans are prob. there as I speak (I'm okay; inside watching the footie)...

Came up behind a 300 year old man doing 40 in a 50, I accelerated past him and hit 55 before quickly backing off back to 50.
2 weeks later got letter through door, prosecuted for doing 55 in a 50. I didn't even see the van but must of been a plain one as the picture clearly showed me and the old **** I overtook.

Got snapped by one recently,(coming off a dual carriageway)notice of intention to prosecute came through in three days.Got offered speed awareness course and took that option,so a morning off work and £90 lighter but no points. We just have to be careful where we choose to enjoy the performance these cars offer.
