Thinking of buying a bugeye
 

So I'm thinking of buying a bugeye wrx, it's been a while since I've owned a scooby and my last one was a v1 sti so I know the performance won't be the same.

I'm looking to sell my 07 plate 140 Tdi seat Leon and buy a cheaper car and the bugeye seems to fit the bill. I have no need for a diesel engine anymore as I do at most 100 miles a week and that's on a good week, some weeks less.

I can't see the point in having my Leon sat on the drive most of the time so I'm thinking I can sell it for just over 7k and buy a bugeye for around 3.5.

I've also been itching to get back into scooby ownership since I sold my last one as well.

I know the bugeye is seen by some as the bottom of the pile but I don't really want another classic, unless it was a p1 or 22b and they are out of my budget, so looking for some buying advice, what should I be looking out for on the bugeyes?

if you do go for a bugeye go for the sti mate, ive had mine for 3 years and never had a prob with it and you can get them for about 5k these days with low miles

I am half tempted by the sti I must admit but I know if I did I would get the modding bug again big time, I fell I might be more restrained if I stuck with a standard wrx, could be wrong though.

you no you would mod it then you will only mod it with sti bits so why not start with the sti lol

Save a little longer and pick up a sti version you will regret it if you don't

It's not really a case of saving mate, the cargoing to sell would more than cover the cost of a bug sti. I was more thinking about being sensible! Lol

Is there any faults to look for when buying a bugeye?

hi mate, bite the bullet and spend out a bit more on an sti ! ive just p.exed my bmw 330d for a bugeye sti, and it was a good move ! you'll only end up spending the difference on modding the wrx for more power !

My bugeye wrx is running at 330 bhp so money and mods are already done lol.

thats fine if you dont want big power,with an sti you get far more for your money,stronger engine,gearbox......the list goes on,not doubting the wrx is a great car,just stating the facts,an sti is a better car out of the factory.

Without a doubt the sti mate but I couldn't justify the extra insurance when I've got a family to pay for lol I'm just your average joe lol

like many of us on here are,but once the modding bug bites it is far better to spend a bit extra in the first place for an sti,than try to start with a wrx,because you have £££s to spend just to make it perform as well as a standard sti,but if you are happy with 330 and your wrx,that is all the matters.some people dont get carried away with the modding bug like most!:thumb:

I could imagine mate but there's not much on the road that'll beat mine like day to day driving etc. don't go on track days or anything so yeh plus my mrs would kill me if I spent anymore on it lol

ive just gone for an sti best thing ive ever done!! insurance is a killer for me as im 23 but trust me its well worth the 1500 a year :):):):):):):):):)

Next car I get is Gunna defo jar already beenodded so I don't have to falk out for it lol.

#deffo go the STi route. I have had my bug STi from new and love it. I have done upgrades as and when parts have started to wear. It is at 105K miles running 440 bhp on the original engine just using add on bits; Turbo, FMIC, Fuel Reg, Fuel pump, exhaust inc headers and standalone ECU. Suspension running Tein coilovers with various whiteline bits and all bushes changed for power flex. Brakes uprated to K-sport items from GB on here. Yes I have spent money on it but normally when parts need replacing. As standard the STi is a great car with upgrades you can personalise it.

now that is impressive, bought from new....

I'm the same mate, first baby on the way soon, that's part of the reason for going for a wrx and not an sti.
I'm sure people would say I shouldn't be looking at scoobys at all but I'm determined life doesn't stop because I'm going to be a dad.

Make a decent practical car, even managed to squeeze our 3 in the back and enough bits in the boot for an over night camping trip (saloon not wagon!)

Really though if you are going to get a wrx you need to get it mapped or get one thats done already in my opinion. Standard ones I test drove felt sluggish to me, PPP one was a bit better but a proper aftermarket exhaust, filter and remap turns it into the car it feels like it should have been out the factory.

Yep my little boys three and he loves my car but especially in your situation buying prams cots etc every penny counts mate. I'm only 27 as well

Well my Leon is on eBay now at a pretty low start price so hopefully will sell then I can start looking properly. I was looking for wagons at first as my own sti was one but they are as rare as hens teeth!

I'd keep looking till you find a wagon mate, they are just so much more useful, and you may even get a blob for that money, my blob wrx ppp was only £4k 6months ago and it had AP 4pots on as well, i even saw a few for the money your thinking of spending, so they are out there.

On the bugs you need to watch out for rust on the front subframe.

I've seen a nice blob eye on e-bay, reasonable price and the guy wants a diesel so there may be a deal possible, have sent him an email.
