Where does your temperature gauge sit?

Hi all,

Noob here, just picked up a 2007 Spec D today

On my way home I had mixed driving, some slow driving and some err.....well.....not so slow ;)

Temp gauge has been all over the place with the varied driving, where should I expect it to sit when driven normal and when driven hard?

ian.e 25 February 2012 05:17 PM

Should sit just a smidge under half at all times, well mine does.

LewisL 25 February 2012 05:20 PM

Yea mine sits just over a 3rd and doesn't move under hard driving

10bats 25 February 2012 05:23 PM

just under half no matter what kind of driving i am doing.

tubbytommy 25 February 2012 05:26 PM

yes mine under half all the time, high temp can be a sign of head gasket failing.
very likely on a 2.5.
get it checked asap and keep an eye on your fluid levels

mikeywilliams 25 February 2012 05:26 PM

same here just under half at all times

Adam-M 25 February 2012 05:27 PM

I'd get it checked out mate, ive saw quite a few Spec D's needing new head gaskets, 2.5s pretty crap out the box mate.

Oh and welcome and enjoy

Dosser 25 February 2012 05:31 PM

Did wonder about possibly head gaskets as the gauge behaves quite eratically. Fluids all good so far though

May not have been like it when I bought it though, I have driven it extremely hard today

CharlySkunkWeed 25 February 2012 05:36 PM

as others , mine sits just half way , and never changes with driving style.

Dosser 25 February 2012 06:08 PM

So if sitting in traffic, whereabouts roughly does the gauge climb to before the fan cuts in?

rob84 25 February 2012 06:23 PM

Should just sit under half way regardless of standing still or driving hard, any higher and you've got big problems ahead

as rob says and i said earlier something is wrong, as you bought it today i would take it back if its a garage or at least get it checked out asap by a specialist as something is wrong.

if it was bought private the problems may be the reason it was for sale.

My temp guage stays just under half way whatever the weather / driving...........My actual temp guage (extra digital one) goes from 82-97 degrees while I'm driving but the OEM guage still doesn't move.....

The only time the OEM guage moved upwards was when the turbo water pipe burst :(

I did buy from a dealer. No issues when viewing, test driving or driving about 40 miles home.

I live by a bypass and have been playing all afternoon. I noticed the temp gauge getting up to around 3/4 so pulled over. Popped bonnet and turned engine off. Turned ignition back on and the fan kicked in straight away and brought the temp down to normal rapidly. I then carried on playing, the temp stayed normal, but when I slowed down and drove home normally the temp went up again then back down again

has it got a warranty? i would get it checked asap as something is wrong.
my gauge never goes above a third regardless.

Sounds as if it might have a minor air lock.
But get a sniff test done too........

Dosser 25 February 2012 07:44 PM

an air lock.....?

peter zippy reid 25 February 2012 08:08 PM

Do a search for air lock on here

Cheers, will do

Found an interesting recent thread by Oracle - `Overheating, Thermostat or water pump???`. Gonna give the car a good going over tomorrow.

Head gaskets would not be the end of the world, I had budgeted for a new cambelt and a bit of contingency pot for anything else needed. I was aware of the fairly common 2.5 engine issues before buying and had this in mind.

Not quite the start I had in mind joining scoobynet, thought i`d do some mega detailing first and put some pictures up.

Thanks for the all the advise so far guys :thumb:

but if you got it from a dealer surely it has some warranty

If the temp gauge rose when booting it then I'd suggest either you've got an airlock or the headgasket is on it's way out. was there any coolant overflowing from the expansion bottle to the right of the radiator ?

Dosser 25 February 2012 09:12 PM

Got a reciept but no `warranty` package as such. I know I must have some legal rights but like I say it was fine when I inspected and tested it before buying. It may be a result of my driving style  Legally, maybe I could pursue it, but morally.....not so sure.

Hopefully it may be an air lock issue.

BTW the cars not standard, it`s running around 340bhp

No, coolant looks fine, on the level and smells normal. Oil still like new, bang on the line. Engine / rad not over hot to the touch.

Gava 25 February 2012 09:23 PM

yeah prob an air lock then mate, they are a w*****r to bleed as i found out again then other week after bursting a rad hose.

Mine sits just over a 1/4 on the gauge and never moves- driving hard, sitting in traffic or with the fans on

Dosser 26 February 2012 12:11 PM

Right, been out for a drive, keeping revs below 2500rpm. All fluids still ok.

Temp gauge sat steady just below half. All of a sudden after about 8 miles it climbed up to roughly 2/3 mark. I pulled over and popped the bonnet car still running. The engine didn`t seem hotter than it should be, top hose was only warm to the touch and the bottom hose cold. The fan was running constantly trying to bring down the temperature it thinks is too high, even though the engine isn`t overly hot. I carried on driving and the temperature dropped straight away back to just under half again. Pulled over and the fan was still going for it even though gauge sitting at right temp.

Suggestions

stedee 26 February 2012 01:09 PM

take it back ...... something is wrong!!!! its not up to you to fix it if youve just bought it off a dealer.
as said the temp gauge should stay just under half all the time. the bottom hose being cold means something is wrong, could be stat, could be waterpump.

there is a fit for purpose law meaning they cant sell you something that isnt working properly

tubbytommy 26 February 2012 01:12 PM

not saying this has happened but some less trustworthy sellers remove thermostat to mask overheating.
