Turbo and Carbon Fibre Advise

Evening guys

I am currently running a TD05 20G turbo on my bug. The engine is a 2.5 and pushing about 380bhp / 410 ft Ib with this turbo. I know I should be sensible and think this is enough but on the way back from last weeks meet my neighbour was pulling away form me and he has a virtually standard bug with a sport cat exhaust and a remap (how childish!!). I would love to say he got the drop on me but it happened twice! :cuckoo:

What would be the next turbo to go for?

Also, my bonnet is carbon fibre. Not cracked but the lacquer is faded in places. Probably a rub down and a respray, same goes for the bonnet! Anybody point me in the right direction of somebody with expertise?

Cheers

David

What other supporting mods have you got? Are you running a 5 or 6 speed? If 5 then I'd say you're on borrowed time! Here's a nice turbo for you ;)

Cheers Mervil.

Other mods to engine:
version 5/6 sti heads, APS 70mm CAI, samco turbo inlet, prodrive turbo inlet, full H&S decat system, GT spec headers wrapped, 740cc injectors, APS 725 FMIC, samco radiator hoses, UK 6 speed gearbox, walbro fuel pump, fuelab regulator.

What 20g have you got? With the MD you will see over 400bhp! Also, I'd be tempted to replace the Walbro with an RCM jobbie :)

Also, what ECU are you running? By goin SimTek or Syvecs you get rid of the restrictive MAF :thumb:

Another thing worth asking is who mapped your car?

mervil 20 February 2012 07:58 PM

That was gonna be my next question, don't wanna cram all the questions in one post, need to get y post count up Ty :D

And double posting helps as well...;)

Either ur neighbour has more done than he's letting on or there is something worng with ur car and its not making anywhere near what u think it is....

A Bug STI with a sportcat and re-map would be luckly to do 350bhp with similar torque so if thats pulling away from ur car (also a bug so same weight) then ur car aint running more power and torque than it....

Where did u get the 20G from?? and as said who mapped the car??

The Trooper 1815 20 February 2012 08:13 PM

Do you have documented proof of the parts you say on on the car?

And to back up Merv, Ty and Dean, who mapped it and is there a printout of BHP/Torque?

The first one was meant to be deleted :D

On a JA Warehouse 20g, Simon (JGM) squeezed 390/370 from my 2.0 Blob STi with exhaust mods, OEM injectors, CAiK, Walbro and headers! He wound the timing back as it was detting at the top and ended up at 380/365 ! With a better 20g, say an Andy Forrest one, a good mapper should make that car pretty much fly! :)

The Trooper 1815 20 February 2012 08:52 PM

Having been behind DannyBoy070 in his 400BHP+ car when he floors it, in the right gear, it's 'kin impressive.

So, 380 BHP over a standard Bug should produce the same results.

Car was mapped by Simon and Charlie jgm/srr 2 weeks ago and done the trip home.

Ecutek remap of standard ecu.

It could be my obesity to!

Pricey 20 February 2012 09:06 PM

I would chuck the maps on but haven't figured that out yet!

mp24 20 February 2012 09:10 PM

Have you got dual maps and running on the lower boost ???

On mine i have to press the accelerator pedal to the floor and push the rear demister button to change maps....

Pricey 20 February 2012 09:16 PM

Have got an avcr boost controller but definitely on right setting, 1.68 bar. I am not saying it is slow just a bit surprised. Maybe he is a bit more brutal with his right foot than me!

Cannon Fodder 20 February 2012 09:29 PM

If your neighbour has a WRX (td04) or STi (vf30) then he might get the drop on you if he was in the right gear and you weren't, as the td05 will take longer to spool up being a larger turbo.

Plus if he got a WRX then his gearing will be different to yours as well.

Assuming he's got a remapped WRX with a td04 then he will be around 280bhp, then he will spool quicker than you, and let's be honest once rolling and in the right gears 100bhp difference in your favour hardly means you're going to pull away in fast and furious style.

Really, I love that film too! A re-match is on the cards!

Thanks boys.. I'd need to see the bonnet (and probably have a play) to let you know your options.

No engine advice i'm afraid.. Detailing is my speciality!

Sleiper STI 25 February 2012 01:22 PM

Need to remember whoever is on the turbo first will usually have the edge!

Pricey 27 February 2012 03:13 PM

Thanks guys for the feedback. I am going to drop the car down to Ti22 for a look.

Will also keep my eyes peeled for a turbo.
