Powder coated wheel major failure! Images not suitable for children!

Had these 3 months. Appeared absolutely mint when purchased privately. Seller claimed to have had them done professionally. :rolleyes:.

£400 damage to car and £615 for new 18" Inovit Redlines and tyres. :cry:

Please discuss.

what damage to the car? and were there any warning signs? like cracks appearing etc..

'Anger' told me once that Powder coating wheels is bad for them. I guess this is proof.

How the hell did that happen mate

Started with a clicking noise consistent with the speed of the wheel.

No signs of damage to the wheel at all.

After about 15miles the wheel detached, wrecking the wheel bearings and damaging the front wing as it left the car.

Slow speed so could have been so much worse.

Those wheels have been cooked ! potentially poor powdercoating, although common in WRX wheels regardless of powdercoating. Quite possible they were compromised before the refurb. :)

They don't look like Redlines to me, are you sure they are genuine. Iv seen this on powder coated motorbike wheels before, very scary.

No, they are 17" oem wrx wheels.

I can't trust the other 3 wheels so I've ordered some Inovit Redlines to replace.

What would you guys do with the other 3 wheels? Has to be scrap in my opinion.

I know nothing about powder coating, but have heard of it, whats the process involved with it to end up like that?

I do powder coating the wheels would of been heated to 180 + c for half hour or so don't think I'd powder coat ally wheels

Oh,that explains why my Redlines look totally different.
I believe the heating of the wheels for the coating process makes the alloy brittle & more likely to crack.
It's a real shame,but those wheels are scrap,if that happened on another of those wheels someone may be killed.

most pro shops powdercoat alloywheels and 180c aint enough to aneal the alloy to the point it destroys itself the wheel must of been damaged at some point,ive had several wheels and know of several that have been powdercoated with no problems and its good job you were doing a lowish speed but still a brown trouser moment.

Pretty much the same thing happened to me...

Bought wheels off here 'professionally done, mate yes' on the car for one afternoon, thtew car into a bend at 90, err I mean 60, and 5 seconds warning, wheel leaves car.

Quite common occurrence following powdercoating.

There's NO WAY I would have another PC'd wheel again, it really doesn't pay

I was going to send mine for powder coating next week think I'll just them sprayed now

As I have set of wheels due for a refurb, this got me thinking/worried, so I had a little search on the subject of refurb-powder coating alloy wheels.

Strange why this seems to happen a lot yet a pro wheel shop still offers powdercoating service?

I'd hate to think I've caused people to worry or be paranoid but it seems these oem 17" wheels don't take very well to powdercoats.

I'd say people have learnt here to only use very reputable powdercoating companies if at all with these wheels.

I bought mine from a lad in Halifax. He had the engine out of his Silver Bugeye when I collected them. He'd just had them powdercoated. I'd like to know if he was aware of any pre-powdercoat cracks/damage?
