Help Bosch 044 pump wiring

Hi evryone,
I'm about to fit a swirl pot to my 96STI. Iv got the pot, pipes & pump, but haven't sorted the electrical side yet.
I understand that I join in to the existing fuel pump wiring via a relay, but has anyone got any advice pictures or diagram for this, & what relay do I need & where can I get one.
Thanks Richard.

P1Drifter 11 February 2012 03:45 PM

number 30 from the relay to th battery (fused)

85 on the relay to earth

86 to your original fuel pump feed from under the seat or from the relay under the dash
(link into it if still using your original pump as a lift)

87 is the positive to your fuel pump and obviously earth the other side.

Thanks P1 that's a big help, what amp wiring should I use & where is the best place to get a relay & what relay do I need?
Thanks, Richard.

i used a relay similar to this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12Volt-30A...item415c91bd65
but depending on your setup you want the fuse as close to the battery as possible (my pump and swirl pot are under the bonnet) i used 12 awg wire

RICHARD J 12 February 2012 05:12 PM

Thanks P1 mine is going under the bonnet too so I should be ok with that relay fitted close to the battery. I'm assuming that the fact that relay is for a fog lamp is irrelevant,

P1Drifter 12 February 2012 05:42 PM

the fact the ad says its for a light make no difference mate, just make sure its a 30 amp relay

my setup

Very tidy set up. That's exactly what Iv got in mind. I'll order the relay now & I'll get it all plumbed in next week. Thanks for all your help P1 much appreciated.

welcome mate

Just gonna resurrect this thread guys I'm looking to be doing this soon mine is going to be boot mounted alongside the relay what gauge wire do you recommend ?

What's the best way to run the cable from the relay to the battery

Any more things I'd need to know let me now

Cheers

Steve

P1Drifter 26 February 2012 01:31 PM

use minimum 12awg wire and i i would of thought the best way to run the cable would be through the car ???

stevemoir 26 February 2012 02:21 PM

Yeah I meant through the car lol but I meant like removing sills etc

Steve

P1Drifter 26 February 2012 03:54 PM

surely you can figure that bit out for yourself ?

stevemoir 26 February 2012 04:47 PM

Yes I think I know how to remove sills mate

Just thought of a bit of common courtesy for you to say what problems you encountered

But I can see yours is fitted in the engine bay so I'll hold out for someone who's done the boot setup

If I can ask a silly question- what do the numbers above refer to? Is it ecu outputs?

I didn't know if I tapped into an ecu wire if that would trigger the new fuel pump relay?

Those maybe really dumb questions- apologies in advance!

they are the numbers on the relay pins mate

In the main fuse box in the engine?

I have found the fuel relay in my 98 behind the dash, but cant get a decent feed from it- cheers

Grant

The wire should be black & red but check with voltmeter or test light. You can hear your in tank pump at the same time as your test lights on if it's the right wire. I followed P1s instructions & mine works perfectly, easy when someone tells you how.

no, you need to use another relay to drive the new fuel pump, you just use the old fuel pump power feed to trigger the new relay

Use P1s link above, that's the exact relay I used works a treat & is even fused.

What gauge wire did you use to connect into the live feed for the standard pump Richard? I see 12AWG (25amp) for the battery/external pump connections but the smaller gauge feed for the in-tank pump is on a 15amp fuse.
Thanks
Trev

I used 25amp wire for the whole instalation exactly as per P1s instructions & it's all working fine at 450BHP for nearly as long as this thread has been going. I didn't join into the fuel pump wires though, I went directly to the pump relay feed behind the dash & ran the wire across the car from driver side to passenger side then through the grommet in the bulkhead.

thanks for that, useful thread:thumb:
