DUMP VALVE / BOV HELP

hi all, right quick question and i should imagine you'v heard it a 1000 times but here goes anyway, ive just purchased a uk classic 1997 turbo wagon and i want to put a dump valve on it, i see alot of people dont like them or think you should use one but i kinda like the sound, ive had a 4 subaru turbo's before but they have all been imports so obviously the intercooler is different on the uk model so the dump vale goes on the other end, i know where is sits when fitted(see pic) but is it as simple as cutting the hose, fitting the valve and putting a bung in the other end, also before i order the valve do i want recirc or atmospheric, one other thing quickly, if you see the picture below there is a red block thats acting as a 3-way running off the actuator, is it doing anything other than working as a 3-way t piece as i recall i had a manual boost controller in that sort of place on one of my imports, thanks for your help in advance ;-)

Asking that question on here will get a very mixed response! Good luck!

LOL yeah im expecting to be told off by the hate the bov brigade, i dont mind the telling off aslong as they tell me how to fit it afterwards ;)

Yeah, you can cut that pipe to fit a VTA DV - clamped with another jubilee clip.

...Then you'd need to remove the OEM DV (and the remainder of that recirc hose attached to it)... then plug the recirc intake on the turbo intake pipe.

Why not remove the OE d/v that is on the end of the large pipe and fit an uprated RECIRCULATING type in it's place?

But to be honest, no gain to be had unless you are going over 500bhp or your old one is kaput.

this seems the easier option, im not looking for any gain other than the noise, i was watching the one in the picture below on ebay, would that one be any good, does it need to be a certain size to avoid having to change pipes, also does the OE d/v have the small pipe that goes on the little nipple already?

The best recirc replacement is Forge's one for a MY97/98. It is of the correct pattern i.e. the input and reirc's ouput are at 90-degree to each other, so it will be a simple swapover job. Only problem is, it's expensive...

And yeah, for ANY DV/BOV to work correctly, there must be the vac pipe form the inlet manifold to the DV/BOV vac nipple.

The Forge one is the one I have, but currently running FMIC.

joz8968 23 January 2012 10:19 PM

It's the only recirc substitute I'd ever fit.

Had their MY93-96 in-line one on my old 93 WRX when I got it rempped to 282bhp.

Bought it off a member on here.... For a tenner! :D

Right then, recirc valve going on, looked on ebay, new ones start at 80 up to 200 used from 30 to about a 100, before I buy one off there has anyone got one laying about they could sell me to save me getting sent a bit of old scrap ;)

joz8968 24 January 2012 12:11 PM

Is there actually anything wrong with your car's current original one? 'Cause if not, then you're not gaining anything by fitting one i.e. it doesn't give you extra performance or anything.

The Forge one (all metal) comes into its own at high boost levels, as its materials/construction means it's less likely to split (or possibly leak whilst on boost). That's the only potential benefit it'll give... Aside from looking nice. :D

Agree with the above. The standard unit is very good. If your going for a new re-circulating one there is no point! Won’t hear the dump valve noise any more that a standard one. Only get that with vent to air valves.

blackhawk56 24 January 2012 12:52 PM

your after a vent to atmosphere pal if you wanna here the noise recirc will do nothin youd b aswell leaving standard one on if goin for a recirculating dv

BILLYBONKERZ 26 January 2012 06:50 PM

THANKS FOR THE ADVICE, VENT TO ATMOSPHERE IT US THEN ;-),

joz8968 26 January 2012 07:23 PM

lol, gone round in circles. :D

BILLYBONKERZ 26 January 2012 08:16 PM

Lol yep completely, but I didn't relise recirc bov's don't make that much noise so atleast ive learnt something ;)

joz8968 26 January 2012 08:23 PM

Yeah, they're all but silent - not surprising really.

Defo VTA if you want the noise.
