whats the cheapest way to get to cornwall?

I need to find the cheapest way to cornwall, Penzance to be exact. My best friend is getting married next year and I am one of the groomsmen. I need to get my suit (cornish tartan to be exact) fitted.

Not really feeling the 6 hour drive each way, so I was wondering if there was any other way of getting down there that is
a/ cheaper than driving
b/ quicker than driving
c/ less hassle than driving.

Anyone have any ideas?
Cheers in advance,
astraboy.

i looked into all avenues last year mate from barnsley to newquay but in the end driving was the cheapist option, 4hrs from south yorks isnt too bad as the A30 is no longer a pain in the ass,.

mystery_machine 21 December 2011 07:54 PM

Train will take you all the way to Penzance, doubt its cheaper than driving though.

dpb 21 December 2011 08:08 PM

Gotta be the cho cho

If you start looking now youll probably get a round ticket for less than 300 quid :D

Paulo P 21 December 2011 08:32 PM

Don't think it's 6 hours each way unless you drive very slowly mate :lol1: It takes me 4 hours door to door to just outside st austell so I'd imagine it's 5 hours tops to Penzance because it's a straight run down the A30 and the A30 is mostly dual carriageway now :thumb:

Newquay has an airport but I doubt flights would be any cheaper.

ScoobySteve69 21 December 2011 08:42 PM

Teleportation :lol1:

astraboy 21 December 2011 09:06 PM

hmm, the trainline.com want 94 quid for tickets. Wonder what the megabus can do?

kingofturds 21 December 2011 09:11 PM

Are you wearing a cornish tartan skirt... I mean kilt then:D Not sure where you live but newquay airport is only 40 miles away and you can get some decent prices if you're lucky

dpb 21 December 2011 09:23 PM

Whooops forgot about the megabus , take your own pack lunch

Chip 21 December 2011 09:32 PM

Walk or cycle ;)

Kieran_Burns 21 December 2011 09:42 PM

If you're only going down to get the suit fitted why don't you just get a tailor to measure you up in your home town and email the measurements down?

I know it's not quite the same, but it's hellishly cheaper

I was born here. moved to the SE and have now moved back. The answer is ....... DRIVE! Penzance is at the end of the train line - but you'd be lucky to find a train to there that didn't stop at every station in Cornwall! Whereas driving, cut off the M5 at Exeter and follow the A30 ..... end of.

Completely agree Dave :thumb: Cornwall is my 2nd home so it's no agro to me and that's the way I'd do it.

Besides which even if public transportation were cheaper it's still preferable to drive as you don't have to share your personal space with the great unwashed :)

DYK 22 December 2011 09:42 AM

Just drive its the best way,why wait around for trains etc.Get in your car put some chilled out music on and cruise. And keep yourself going with a stash of Ginsters pasties. ;)

dpb 22 December 2011 09:46 AM

Pick up cheap tart promise of romantic weekend

Theres your driver sorted

Wurzel 22 December 2011 09:57 AM

National Express coaches are pretty cheap. However people might be able to give you a better answer if they knew where you were coming from. It normally costs me about 34 quid return from Reading when I go to Saltash and it is about a 4 hour journey.

When I drive I go M4 to Bristol then M5 to Exeter I think then A38 into Cornwall via Plymouth. and it only takes a few hours.

Leslie 22 December 2011 01:26 PM

Take the train without a ticket, lie in your teeth, refuse to get off, and threaten any attempt to eject you as an act of assault!

Yep. As Wurzel says, where are you coming from? I do Liverpool (Maghull) to Truro (ish) in 5 1/2 hours without breaking sweat. Add another 20/30 mins to Penzance.

Megabus will take 12 hours

look on trainline, see where the stops are then book a ticket to each of the stops, can save a lot of money, the missus has just saved about £70 for a one way to Manchester
with one stop

or look at flights to Newquay

If money is no object then the train is best option, otherwise I think you will end up driving
