Where's the best place to buy a HID kits from for my classic?

What's the best make and brightest? I understand there not legal anymore either

I would go for 6000k bulb as there the nicest colour there not the tacky blue that all the chavs run and they give off a nice white light which is more usable.

Also fitting these without projector headlights will make your beam scatter and blind oncoming traffic and will make your headlights look pants.

I assume you've done the usual searches about just how good these things are?

There are loads of threads on here about decent dip/cr@p main beam, poor focus etc.

You can't polish a turd: Scoob lights are crap. Brighter bulbs, HID kits, no matter what, yes, you'll likley get more light of the road, but more scatter too.

Best bet is to fit projectors into classic crystal lights........ have a look on the archive forum, top thread.;)

They are in the USA, but will do them for RHD cars too.

The guy there is an absolute mine of info and very helpful.

DO be careful, if ordering, to spec RHD or they will be for the USA market and quite wrong for ours.

Anything other than projectors in a classic is going to cause problems. Not for the driver, but for oncoming traffic.

Buy a set of crystal lights, then buy a set of projectors, ballasts etc from the USA here: www.theretrofitsource.com, then DIY or pay me.

I can vouch for Jeff's handy work on his car. Chavs run these scattered HID kits on normal lights - it's dangerous and rightly becoming illegal. Fit them properly or not at all IMHO, and ignore traders with 'vested' interest!!

We've had the new regs posted several times on here, and everyone was clear, the wording said that if fitted, those items must work.

Here you go:
[B]Vehicles equiped with HID or LED dipped beam headlamps MAY be fitted with headlamp washers and a suspesnsion or headlamp self levelling system.

Where such systems are fitted they must work; however it is accepted that it may not be possible to readily determine the functioning of self levelling systems. In such cases the benefit of the doubt must be given.

Method of inspection -

Where HID or LED dipped beam headlamps are fitted, switch on the headlamps and check the operation of any headlamp levelling and cleaning devices.

Reason for rejection

A headlamp levelling or cleaning device inoperative or otherwise obviously defective.[/B]

+1, the wording is quite clear...

It is down to an assessors view whether or not a mod is inappropriate and as long as aftermarket HIDs are properly fitted there should be no issue...

I have been put off of HID's until now, but the wording above is very clear.
You do not need leveling or washer systems, but if you have them they must work.
Abit like if you have a rear wiper it must work, if you have a spare wheel it must be legal etc...

The presence and operation of these headlamp cleaning and levelling devices has been added to the test. Therefore, if a mandatory headlamp levelling or cleaning device is missing, inoperative or otherwise obviously defective, the vehicle will fail.


This raises the question of whether these checks apply to vehicles fitted with after-market HID lighting kits. These kits convert conventional halogen headlamps to HID Xenon and they are widely sold and fitted to vehicles used on the road. The Department for Transport considers that after-market systems should be required to meet the same safety standards as that applied in respect of these lamps at vehicle Type Approval. Therefore, in order to pass the MOT test, vehicles fitted with after-market HID systems would also need to be fitted with headlamp cleaning and self-levelling systems. Some high specification estate cars are fitted with a selflevelling suspension system and this would be considered as adequate for the purpose.

It is also worthy of note that a few high performance vehicles fitted with HID headlamps that have barely any luggage space and stiff suspension do not require a self-levelling system

The MOT test manual conflicts with this information and does not mandate either self-levelling systems or washers, only that they must work IF fitted, again info lifted from to new MOT manual on the VOSA website...

As above.

The DoT got it's knickers in a twist and issued it's ADVICE.
Then, in came European law and their advice was shelved.
The new manual makes it clear that ONLY if such items as self-levelling and cleaning are fitted, should they be tested.

Mine has cleaning and DRIVER levelling, electrically, so who knows?

Mine will have both come MOT time - simple piece of engineering to adapt these.
