That does seem expensive at first but then when you consider similar things on the road it's not that expensive.

Owch. I wonder how heavy its going to be? As I have a feeling this is going down the same path as the outgoing Celicas: Nice, but behind the times. I wonder why they aren't teaming up with Yamaha for their 'sporty' engines anymore? Although they really did drop a bollock with the 1.8 VVTLi unit (2ZZGE - a useless engine for road car use), so maybe thats a good thing ;)

197bhp with 157lb/ft is quite a healthy figure for a 2.0 n/a road engine, but it'll be totally lost if its put in a chassis heavier than 1200kg, and knowing boxers in n/a form, its likely to still be gutless at low revs.

The last Celica was only 1200kg which is nothing compared to modern cars of similar size, and even then it struggled....partly due to the engine being a 1.8 and the VVTLi version having a stupid on/off VVTLi power band that was next to useless in the real world, combined with the lack of low down grunt (ok for a 1.8, but not enough for a sporty car). Even the older 2.0GT (3S-GE for Toyota nuts) was asthmatic at low revs

I don't think it'll cut it for me, if I were trying to find a normally aspirated sports car to replace what I already have; I don't think its going to be Golf R32 replacement, although a Golf weighs as much as a e39 5 series (1500kg), however it has enough grunt to get over that.

Also Mcpherson struts, oh come on! Isn't about time this stupidly compromised suspension system was dumped on 'sports orientated driver's cars' ? This belongs on shopping cars and the sporty versions based upon them like hot hatches and Imprezas etc. Seeing this is a clean sheet car, they could have made this car special and bring back double wishbone/multi-link on the front. Or at least make the shock/strut move independantly to the hub. It would then at least justify the cost over a 'hot hatch'.

Even my wife's 2008 Honda Accord has double-wishbone front and multi-link rear coilover suspension as std, coupled with variable gear ratio steering. And thats on a family Tourer. In fact I think Honda would have been better off teaming up with Subaru than Toyota!

Dissapointing: And gah!...they 'had' to do it didn't they? What is it with manufacturers current obsession with stupid oversized grilles? They get something that is nice but a little bland, and in a vain effort to try and tart it up they go and stick on a bumper with a ugly oversized trout grille stolen straight from a pug 308 :mad:

What makes it worse is many of these yawning-hippo-grilled cars are now having active shutters fitted behind the grilles to STOP the air passing through and reduce drag (most BMWs, Ford, Honda etc) . FFS how counter intuitive is that? Just bin the active p**s-flaps and don't have big grille in the first place! :cuckoo:

the last pictures i really saw of this was this and im sorry but i think it looks the nuts and would of gone and had a look but now it just looks like every other main stream piece of poop getting released. they both remind me of a poorer / softer 370z with less power and you know by the time you add a few optional extras its going to cost you over 30k, madness. any way here is the look i was hoping for

The STi version may still be awesome looking but I bet it'll cost more around £45k

Look at the shadowing, that isnt a real photo matey. I'll hold my judgement until I see one in the flesh. As a first model with revisions to follow, this isnt bad for a starter.

There's big differences between the JDM, EURO and USDM cars. The Scion FR-S pics have been released as well. Not sure which version Australia would get, but I'm guessing it'd be a combination of the Euro GT 86 and the US FR-S.

They've driven it on Pistonheads. To say they like it is an understatement and then some.

Reading between the lines though I get the distinct impression it's all about the handling and feedback and not the straightline power.

Could be a fun car.......rather than epic :)

if you had any idea how many models of toyota are set to come out but never actually do you would understand that having it at the toyota new model conference is one step closer to it being reality. I still wont hold my breath though.
