Is anybody using this on xp pro

do you have an actual serial port on your laptop or are you trying to use a usb convertor ?
cliffnet is pretty much impossible to get working with usb to serial adapters, only a very few work |

laptops hasn't got one only usb might have a play with it on the PC

You can use a card adaptor if your laptop has a card slot, they usually work.
