Anti virus on smartphones

Does/has anybody bothered with AV software?

JackClark 18 September 2011 09:27 PM

Android, I'd make sure everything was scanned before using it, be paranoid.

myblackwrx 18 September 2011 10:04 PM

Any particular reason why?
You'll have to forgive me as I've no idea about the ins and outs of the various OS etc.

JackClark 18 September 2011 10:36 PM

Apple have a Marketplace for apps. Android will use any old cesspit, full of malicious apps.

Adrian F 18 September 2011 10:40 PM

JackClark as an Apple fanboy arent you just spreading rumours !

JackClark 18 September 2011 10:49 PM

Facts. I worked in Security for a decade, that's why I use Apple.

Indeed just look at Scarlett Johansson who had her android phone hacked and had pics of her naked with a rubber chicken hanging out of her asshole spread over the net. Oh wait.....was that an iphone?

:lol1: Touche' Sir!!

But the slogan...

"If you haven't got an Iphone, then they're aren't naked pictures of you on the web"

Hasn't quite caught on! :D

P.s. You're lying about the rubber chicken though, right? :norty: :lol1:

Please don't make me trot out a load of security links, try google. Saying that, even http://www.google.com/security has a broken Android.

No doubt those pictures you mention will be used to lure people at some point.

If we are talking about Android then I have Lookout installed, but have never had any malicious apps on my phone. It's just there as a precaution. Like Jack says, Google don't vet the apps before they go on the Android Market so you could download something dodgy. Google are quick to pick up on any though and have the ability to automatically delete said apps from your phone. Look at what permissions you are allowing the app to have when installing and also check the reviews of the app. If you're really paranoid you could only install apps from the Amazon app store as they do vet them first.

Excellent answer thanks,I can understand Jacks point as there does seem to be a lot of crap out there.

I thought the Amazon app store wasn`t available over here yet!

Scooby Soon! 19 September 2011 11:13 AM

don't install "sexy Asian chick wallpaper app" or anything that sounds similar and you should be fine

Yeah you're right, I've never tried to use it so didn't realise it was US only at the moment.

GazTheHat 19 September 2011 02:53 PM

Had my Desire for 18m and never had an anti-virus installed and i've tried hundreds upon hundreds of apps. I also have "Unknown Sources" ticked for apps that don't come from the market place. Never had any problems. Ignore the scaremongering.

Saint AAI's post above is the most sensible and genuine. Ignore the rest. ;)

scoobyverysoon 19 September 2011 03:22 PM

only use aps with lots of downloads and lots of reviews - been fine for me this way - used AVG fo a while but it did my head in sometimes
