Thanks

scoobyhyp 03 August 2011 06:14 PM

working now m8 ... if it was mine i would take the alternator belt off just to eliminate any noises coming from the belt / alternator thats where i would start ....

andy bird 03 August 2011 07:44 PM

doesnt sound bearing related to me so I was going to try the belts first

how do I remove the belt cover or check the tensioners etc? mine is a 2001 wrx just that noise is the same.

scooby spares have said they will sort no bother but just trying to same both of us hassle for a minor issue.

scoobyhyp 03 August 2011 08:16 PM

not sure what the front of yours looks like but on the classic there is a couple of 10mm`s holding the cover, the adjuster is 12mm i think just unlock it then wind it off to release the belt

scoobyhyp 03 August 2011 08:17 PM

does it still do the noise when hot or just cold ???

andy bird 03 August 2011 08:20 PM

more noticeable when warm but think its still there when cold.
seems to go away off idle no knocking or rattling up the revs

Turbotits 03 August 2011 08:59 PM

Possible timing belt tensioner at a guess

andy bird 03 August 2011 09:03 PM

it did have the cam belt done when the engine went in last week, any way to make it better if its that

scoobyhyp 03 August 2011 09:06 PM

its not the orginal engine then ? has it been rebuilt ? or is it a second hand lump ?

andy bird 03 August 2011 09:11 PM

second hand lump mate. seems sweet apart from that noise

scoobyhyp 03 August 2011 09:20 PM

who done the cambelt for ya ? garage ? do you now what year the lump came from ? it maybe from an earlier subaru with hydrualic tappetts ?

andy bird 03 August 2011 09:24 PM

the engine came from a bugeye same as mine, scooby spares fitted it they done a good job too. just got to sort this little issue

scoobyhyp 03 August 2011 09:31 PM

did they do the guide wheels as well as the tensioner wheel ? or just a belt.. only problem with second hand lump bit of lottery to be honest ...

andy bird 03 August 2011 09:34 PM

probably just the belt to be honest, only charged me for the belt. do you reckon I should replace guide wheels and tensioner then? if that easy to do? presume when you put the cambelt on the tensions are a one time deal?

scoobyhyp 03 August 2011 10:15 PM

you can reuse the belt as long as its fitted the same way ..you can check the guide wheels by spinning them to see if there dry and the tensioner should always be changed with the belt it is a hard job if youve never done one to be honest there is alot to line up maybe take it back ??

andy bird 03 August 2011 10:43 PM

probably right just a pain for £100 worth of fuel!

andy bird 03 August 2011 10:45 PM

and to clarify if it was the cambelt tensioner it would go when not on idle?

scoobyhyp 03 August 2011 11:24 PM

if it was a guide or tensioner it would probably change when reved up.. if it was mine take it somewhere local just to get someone to listern to it for a second opion before doing another 100 quid of fuel !! lol you dont want that belt going do you !!
