Could it be the new tyres?

After a couple of posts on here and on other forums regarding the steering/handling problem with my UK Turbo

https://www.scoobynet.com/general-te...-steering.html

My thought keep coming back to the same thing, the tyres. The problem started immediatly after fitting 4 new Toyo T1-Rs. I've had these before ith no problems so I can't see why it would cause such a problem now.

Questions:

Is it possible for new tyres to cause this vague, wayward feeling to the steering?

Is there anything I can do to the set up of the car to remove/reduce the effect, i.e. introduce a little toe in, say 10-30mins or increse tyre pressures by a small amount to stiffen the sidewalls.

Any advice would be appreciated, obviously replacing these tyres with anothr set is out of the question.

How many miles have you done on the new tyres?

If the old ones were worn (aren't they always :)) then the deeper tread blocks will give more movement on the road. Also the tyre surface needs to be scrubbed in. I have found these affects can take several hundred miles to get used to.

Also, if I read it correctly, you have gone from 45 to 40 profile tyres, but the geometry set up was done on the old tyres. That's 10mm reduction in side wall height, which will make them stiffer if the construction is the same. Maybe try reducing the pressures a bit, rather than increasing them?

The pressures are standard, 33F and 28R. Would you recomened coming down from that?

well i run 215 17 40 toyo t1 r and i use 33 f and 30- 31 in the back i would sugeust get the geo done again as it should awalys be check when fitting new tyres and really goe set up should be done once a year any way on are lovely uk roads

Geometry was set up and I tried the toe at different settings, 30' in to 30' out with no difference. Now set at parallel.

I run 37f 35r your pressures are too low for T1R's :)

I had that when i first put a new set of Toyo's on my last scoob, it takes a little time for them to bed in but they will be fine after they have done a few hundred miles.:thumb:

you say my preesure is to low but the tyres have been on a year and still have a few months on them, and ive never had a problem of no grip even in the wet it good ask duncan graham he been in it in the wet grene laning lol

T1R has a very flexible sidewall. Maybe the additional height of the new tyre has highlighted this issue....

^ These pressures are too low :thumb:

If 33/31 suits you then cool, but I was mainly referring to 28 on the rear, which would be horrible IMHO. Lowest I would run on T1r's would be 36/34 as the car feels dull and bendy with lower pressures rather than sharp and slidey with higher ones :D

happydude303 04 August 2011 03:58 PM

oh right im with you and yeah 28 at the rear is probally a little to low

I'm a 100% with you ... need higher pressure ... plus .. I personally found that the T1Rs that I had didn't stop being greasy until nearly 10k miles ...

In all honesty I just didn't get on with them as the sidewalls were way too soft in my opinion as they tended to suddenly 'collapse' mid corner which was a bit worrisome on a number of occasions ..

That's not to say that they are not a good tyre .. many people like them .. they just didn't seem to like my setup/driving style

Thanks for all the advice guys. I've had a bit of a play with pressures, certainly an improvement with higher all round, will finalise them at the weekend.

Currently with 34/31, feels ok so far.

I'm at 35F and 31R, this seems to have erradicated the problem, obviously the ride is a little firmer but its easily bearable.
