PC wont play DVDs

After my thread yesterday asking now to copy DVD's to my HDD. I had wanted to make a start on this thismorning but ran into problems straight away.

When I put a DVD in the drive and Windows Media Player busts into life I get the following error

Windows Media Player cannot play this DVD because there is a problem with digital copy protection between your DVD drive, decoder, and video card. Try installing an updated driver for your video card.
I have updated the drivers on my graphics card, dvd drive and downloaded k-lite codecs with no luck.

Can anyone else shine a light on this before I buy a Mac?;)

Try downloading VLC media player, plays pretty much anything and will show if the problem is just with windows media player.

Another vote for VLC. Plays anything and everything.

Cheers will give it a blast

Think I've found the problem (maybe). My PC seems to think it has a DVD-ROM drive(D:) and a DVD-Drive(E:) (E:) is set to Region1 and will not allow me to change region even though it says i have 4 goes.

I'm mega confused.:(

just tried realtime and it came up with an error also

The DVD cannot be played. Key exchange for DVD copy protection failed.

Quick update and then I'll defo download VLC. I downloaded WinDVD after a bit of googling and I can now play DVD's via WinDVD but not Windows Media Player.

Do i still need to download VLC or what?

Well balls to that! Just uninstall WinDVD and installed VLC and VLC won't play my DVDs.:(

What might be causing the problem? I assume it is a codec issue?

Jamz3k 01 August 2011 05:56 PM

your quite correct, it was user error!

Working grand!:thumb:

But i still would like to know why Windows Media player won't play my DVDs? Will this not be a complete fly in my ointment as I'll be using my Xbox360 to play the ripped DVDs?

You don't have to pay for it if you look around a bit either. :thumb:
