Funny shaped exhausts tips.

What do you think? :wonder:

Exhaust tips used to be round or oval.

Now we have bizarre triangles and stuff.:cuckoo:

Reminds me of those games for toddlers where you put the right shape in the right hole.

Why a triangle? Does it have some special properties? Couldn't afford another side for a square? I know a Civic is a budget car but c'mon! :lol1:

Purely style over function. Car designers are perpetually 'forced' by the buying public's expectation for fresh car design.

Jamz3k 16 May 2011 11:57 PM

The Honda Civic is one of the worst styled cars on sale at the moment. The over futuristic styling grew old and tiresome quickly.

scottydog137 17 May 2011 12:05 AM

Does anyone know how the BMW mini exhaust tip was styled?

And Pete bought one ;) :D

CREWJ 17 May 2011 08:29 AM

As said it's purely fashion over function.

You have to admit it does look kinda funky but it's just not practical. Also centre exit exhausts should only be used on rear/mid engined cars imo.

It's dreadful I agree, the previous generation wasn't too bad...much more understated.

At least they're not like these:

Exactly it's just gonna require more pipework and weight to route it to the centre.

Even more silly are split exhausts on an engine with a single exhaust manifold! i.e a transverse 4 line again....lol the Civic.:)

As the owner of a rear engined, centre exhaust car, it makes no sense to me other than style and to differentiate from older and lesser models!

CREWJ 17 May 2011 10:11 AM

Well if you want to collect the exhaust from a Vee/flat engine then it makes sense to locate it centrally.

But triangular smoke rings are far more interesting to look at.

Anybody who bought one of those civics and a diesel is a idiot.

:D

Those Saxo's made me laugh. the pipes probably weigh more than the car. :lol1:

Only if rear mounted, otherwise you have to route the exhaust around the rear differential.

Kieran_Burns 17 May 2011 11:32 AM

I always have a smile at the 'twin' pipe exhausts where one of them is purely cosmetic (just a separate pipe welded onto the single exhaust pipe)

Or the straight out pipes when the actual exhaust is pointing down... so you can't tell it's a diesel....

ChefDude 17 May 2011 11:37 AM

i like my car, where you can't see an exhaust unless you are lying on the ground at the back of the car - very neat :)

it does irritate me when you see these fancy 4" exhaust tips and can clearly see the 1.5" exhaust pipe behind it :cuckoo: ...and this is on production cars too!

alloy 17 May 2011 11:48 AM

What about Porsche, they love a poncy exhaust...

Allegedly:

The Mini's beer-can exhaust

One of the teams of designers working on the 2002 MINI was sitting around having a much-deserved beer after a 24-hour period of creating a full-size model out of clay, when chief designer Frank Stephenson spotted a flaw. "We don't have an exhaust pipe," he announced.
The model was to compete against those from 14 other teams the next day and every detail would count. Then a quick solution popped into Stephenson's head: He picked up an empty beer can, cut it in half, stripped off the paint, polished the metal, and glued it to the back of the car. It took just a few minutes.

The team won the competition. That's why there's a hint of a beer can at the end of the production model's exhaust pipe.

Another reason for a central exhaust is to allow for a proper diffuser. but how many production cars have a diffuser? :lol1:

How fast do you have to go to get any benefit though?

Torquemada 17 May 2011 01:18 PM

My brother has a Civic Type R GT and the exhaust tips are not triangular, however the space they sit behind and push gasses through is triangular shaped.
It's actually quite a nice car to drive, although you can't see feck all out of the rear windows!

ScoobySteve69 17 May 2011 02:03 PM

The Civic pipes aren`t triangular though. That`s just the exit `hole`. The actual tailpipes are round :thumb:

ChefDude 17 May 2011 02:10 PM

the audi one is pretty neat. I could see that in the middle of a TT bumper.

You have lost me there. A rear mounted flat engine has exhaust ports on both sides - so why have extra piping to bring the exhaust tips to the centre?

I can think of at least two fabulous, albeit limited, production cars with genuine diffusers that do not have centre exhaust tips.

You barely have to be going 40mph to make an efficient diffuser be beneficial.

I mean instead of having two separate exits. Ideally you would want to have the channels as big as possible, therefore to get the exhaust out of the rear you'd want it out of the middle.

I'm glad Subaru didn't do it - otherwise we'd not be treated to the unique unequal length headers-based "krobba krobba" burble! :D ;)
