Polishing a turd?
Hi
I have just bought a 98 Corsa 1.5 td, it used to be red! whats best to use on it to get it back to the original colour from the current pink?? Cheers James :) |
Few years back I used to have a "red" corsa whilst I was at uni as a runabout. The paint on them is quite crappy and the red ones do all seem to fade to a tired pinky-red, especially if they aren't cleaned and polished occasionally - like mine wasn't :lol1:
I didn't look after it at all, rarely washed it or polished it but what I did a while before I PX-ed it on, was I t-cutted it all over lol! It took a few hours of hard work but it did go some way to restoring the red colour. After doing that give it a clean/polish every few weeks and it should at least slow the process of it fading away again! |
What cleaning kit do you have already?
Imo best to steer clear of t-cut. It's very abrasive. That said if you've only spent a couple of hundred on the car and just want it to look a little bit better then go for it. |
ive just washed it using megs, and ive just give it a layer of hd wax, it looked ok until I decided to try and be clever and use a cheaper wax on top, and all of a sudden its pink again :(
im going to snow foam it tomorrow, and the hd wax it again and see if that does the trick. the "black" plastics are another thing though, ive used the megs bumper care on it and it looks good apart from the side that has been sun bleached the worst, it seems to be grey and its not coming anywhere near black now. any tricks?? |
They are single stage (non clearcoated) so will always fade.
A wax won't do anything really without polishing so your best bet is to polish it (a product with an abrasive) to cut/remove a tiny percentage of the paint surface, revealing an unblemished layer beneath. Adding a few layers of wax after this will help a little to stop it going pink again but it will always go back to pink I'm afraid. |
The paint will always drop back to pink because it is severly oxidised. It needs to be cut back. Best plan of attack would be to wash and clay. Spend a good amount of time on the claying as this does help. Then you'll need to get going with the polish. Menz Intensive Polish on the white side of a german app pad if working by hand or ideally by machine. Be carefull not to polish too much though as you may go through. Cars that are red and have faded tend to have been polished a lot in the past. If you know someone with a paint guage then it's worth borrowing it.
Then you'll need to follow up with something a little softer to refine the finish. Menz Final Finish is great by hand or machine. Or in this case AG Super Resin Polish will help due to the fillers or even better Dodo Lime Prime. After that follow up with your AG HD wax. Get a layer on, leave it 24 hrs then get another layer on there. Next week, wash the car and get another layer on. You'll need to keep on top of the wax with the red as it'll oxdise quickly if left bare. The reason why it's doing this is it's a single stage paint and not clear coated. As for the plastics break out the hair dryer or heat gun. Mask up the paint around it well or even take it off. Take care not to make it too hot as you'll distort or even worse melt it. This will bring the shine back to it. that sounds like hard work :D I just want to get it to a point where it looks acceptable, I just want to make a few quid on it as im not working at the minute.
funnily enough just using the AG HD wax bought the colour back a treat, its just when I added another wax on top on one panel it went pink again, the wing still looks bright red?? go figure.. |
What was the cheapy wax you put on top? Could have a lot of distilates in it which have stripped the HD off.

If you can get it like that then sort out the trim and away you go.

it looks ok actually, its just the plasics that look bad now, can you spray them?

You'd need to degrease them and then primer them with a flexible plastic primer. Try the hairdryer on them first though as that's free. Just keep it moving then a good clean and follow up with some plastic trim care should see you ok. All depends if you're keeping it or turning it around for a quick profit?

turn around I think, the alternative would be to use it on the scumball next year, not made my mind up yet. got to get underneath it first to do some welding.

Comes off bodywork easily too if you make a mistake (I couldn't be arsed removing the trmis and fiddling with the clips). HTH :thumb: |

Quick Mop would bring the colour back to red (or get a friend to do it), You can get plastic bumper spray about £14 a can from halfords IIRC as long as you dont mind lots of masking or Getting them all off, Sand and spray the steel wheel face and back to black the tyres, make sure its clean inside and easy money maker.

I've heard that a glaze is quite good to use to add some moisture to the paint and help it keep the colour in it longer, might be a load of waffle though.

I had this with the wifes corsa....I got it back to red by washing, claying, washing, machine polishing for hours lol....then polishing, glazing, sealing and finaling waxing...
took me about 9 hours over 2 days |
