CAN ANYONE HELP PLZ SO CONFUSED

Im prety new to the scooby scene so advice would b very appreciated ive got a uk impreza version 4 i think lol its an s plate. and i want to tune it abit. but people are saying ive got to buy an apexi ecu or other brands of ecu to get the boost up? but then other people are saying i can turn the boost up with my other supporting mods as long as ive got an air fuel ratio gauge to tel if its over fueling or running lean so do i need an aftermarket ecu or not because on my model i cant have the ecu remapped due to being locked ur comments would be very much appreciated thanks for the help!!!!!!

Firstly, there IS no version 4 UK car. Version 4 applied to the JDM cars.

Yours is a UK car, and if you want to be pedantic, phase 1.5.

Secondly, people are right, you cannot remap, or even tweak the map of a 98 car:(

You need to be VERY careful: talk to a few mappers on here, and some trusted engine builders, before you take advice from folk who don't know a lot, but will happily advise you to do this, that and the other, "Because it worked on my car, and I've had no problems in the last five years,", or because, "it worked on my RS Turbo so it should be OK on a Scoob!". I have actually SEEN that comment!

THOSE people will walk away shrugging when YOUR engine lets go. And when it does, believe me, there won't be much change out of £2000 for a STANDARD rebuild.

Speak to Bob Rawle, Duncan at RaceDynamix, Jolly Green Monster, David at API, Harvey Smith, Allan Jeffery, Mark at Lateral, and DON'T DO ANYTHING UNTIL YOU ARE SURE.

Trust me, Scoob engines are dead easy to kill:(

i thought the 'versions' so to speak, only applied to the STi's not JDM.

Before you even looking at tuning have you sorted out the handling and brakes first

No point going fast if you can't stop or go round corners quicker
Budget £1000 or less on this first before you even consider going under the bonnet

yes mate ive got my brakes and suspension 4 pot subaru on front reconditioned with stainless steel pots and braided hoses and ohline coilovers. oh and forgot to say ive had a full rebuild 2000 miles ago by central subaru 2500 pound full sti spec semi forged i beleive. i thought it would be best to get apexi ecu i dont want to bodge it do i! so i should get my turbo ecu injectors fuel reg and fmic and then phone sumone to fit them all at the same time and map it for me wot power figures would i be looking at if i put td0520g turbo on and all the other stuff thanks for the help guys keep posting all advice is very much appreciated:thumb:

chrispy200+ 29 April 2011 11:59 AM

Your problem with bolting a td05-20g will be the gearbox eventually on a uk car. With supporting mods I'd expect 380bhp from that, pushing 400 if your lucky

dunx 29 April 2011 12:04 PM

That's if your clutch doesn't give-up first...

Depending where yoiu are, there a re a few tuners I'd trust to fit the bits, then map it/have it mapped.

What area do you live in?

ad uk 29 April 2011 09:03 PM

mines not an sti car its uk but with ful sti build but still running uk ecu.brun says i can remap it then i dont no wot to do i just want to tune my first scooby up lol.

TonyBurns 29 April 2011 09:11 PM

Depends what a full sti build is?
If its just pistons then the rods wont be sufficient for good power, you need to know what went into the engine, then the rest of the car suffers (clutch/gearbox etc).
You need to post a full list of what mods the car has if you can, anything your unsure of count as being standard, atleast then when your modding you will know what needs upgrading and what doesnt, and you wont get lots of advice on stuff thats already been done ;)

Tony:)

For pointers look on Andy Forrest Performance website to see what he does for various MY and UK / Jap models.

Care to elaborate? The ESL hasn't been released for the 97/98 yet.

I know it's in testing though. ;)

Slightly unfair to Subaru that.
Are turbo engines of the Subaru variety dead easy to kill or is it really that so many Impreza owners seem to think they are rather more qualified to 'tune' (read muck up) their cars than your average Ford owner?

Gear Head 30 April 2011 05:39 PM

A ford engine takes half the time to build compared to an impreza lump.
The crank in the impreza is the last part you get to, so if the shells have decided to die, the entire engine has to come apart. You can't just drop the sump.
