castrol magnatec or mobil 1 (both 10w 40)?

for my 96 wrx sti, doing a service. which one is better?

and im getting ngk platinum plugs are these good?

greatgonzo 26 April 2011 03:22 PM

Plugs are very good.
I think the Castrol Magnatec is semi synthetic but the Mobil 1 is fully synthetic :wonder: so probably better off with the Mobil, check it with Opie oils you will get all the info you need for you car there.

kaz_r555 26 April 2011 04:16 PM

ah ok, if the castrol is fully synthetic then is it that better?

or the mobil 1?

classicgc8 26 April 2011 04:25 PM

ive been told magnatec in unsuitable in impreza engines due to carbonising at high temps in the turbo, stick with a fully synthetic mate as stable at high temps.

andythejock01wrx 26 April 2011 05:18 PM

Fuchs Titan Pro S Fully synthetic, or Motul.

kaz_r555 26 April 2011 05:24 PM

just spoke to opie, they recommend the 5w 40 titan golf competition oil, at a decent price. is 5w 40 good? or shall i go with 10w 40 mobil 1?

greatgonzo 26 April 2011 06:04 PM

I use Fuchs Titan Pro S Fully synthetic 5-40w and it comes very highly recommended, but I have a 2006 STI not sure if yours would be different, have you checked what the hand book says?

Me too :)

Mobile 1 is a very good oil. 10-40 is ok. I prefer the lighter 5-40 as i do short trips and the uk is a cold country. Ive read scoobs dont like 0-40 or 0-30 though.

for my daily driver classic, ive always used Mobil 1 15w50 Motorsport. for a classic i wouldnt be putting anything lower than a 10w...in it

Steve T 26 April 2011 07:34 PM

I used Mobil 1 in my scoobs for years with no problems, although I now use Fuchs pro s. I,d recommend Mobil 1 over the Magnatec. :) Steve.

I think the classics prefer a slightly more weighted oil than a newage, especially if they have some mileage on them.

opie have told me that the '5w' means the oil circulates faster when the engine is cold over the '10w'. so the '40' is when the engine is at high temperature..

i think ill go for 10w 40 seems safer. mobil 1! :thumb:

Exactly right hence my comment about using a 5-40 because i do short trips and the uk is cold :thumb:

i use 10/40 magnatec in my classic,no issues over the last 5 yrs of daily driving/spirited rides etc

Same as me I use a 5w due to doing short trips

kaz_r555 27 April 2011 09:19 AM

So all in all 5w is ok for the classic engine? Why do people not like the magnatec?

Just want the right oil for my classic so it doesnt go bang!! Lol

Gambit 27 April 2011 09:41 AM

no i wouldnt put 5w anywhere near a classic

SPORTWAGONROY 27 April 2011 09:50 AM

I used magnatec in all my classics never had any issues good oil

B4D HK 27 April 2011 10:28 AM

10/40 for classics folks :)

just be mindfull a friend worked for a reputable oil manufacturer a few years back and the same oil was being put into Asda containers ;)

All oil comes from the same place...........

Yup it does. It all comes out the ground. The difference between mineral, semi, full synthetic ect is the additives but its the additives that look after our engines. Castrol mag is a good oil and i think would be fine in a classic. I to would go for a 10-40 in a classic or high mileage car. I doubt you would see any engine damage let alone one go bang provided you use one of the many quality oils on the market. Stay away from cheap ****e or recycled oil.

Agree..... my MY99 always had Magnatec and I just passed 294,000km with no engine issues so far

Blimey, this thread took over 14 months to reach Australia?

jazzyjembreaze 12 July 2013 02:33 PM

I wouldn't put magnatec in my sub
If it was free ( millers or royal purple for me

jazzyjembreaze 12 July 2013 03:21 PM

Can I just add , it may be fine in a standard engine , as thr have been many past threads on oil in past & some guys have clocked big miles on the stuff
.... But it def wouldn't be on my or many others list for a built engine . :)

Maz 12 July 2013 04:51 PM

Magnatec may be fine in a standard engine or for non turbo but it is a very basic oil. It's not a proper synthetic and is inferior to brands like Millers, Fuch or Motul who have proper fully synthetic oils designed to cope with hard use and elevated power levels. There are lots of folk who have used it for years with no issues BUT as an engine oil it's not something I would use in my Impreza.
