Headlight problem 2003 wrx

Just fitted the new droplinks went for a quick drive to check all ok,

Get back and notice that passenger headlight is out, but drivers is fine also the full beam head lights have come on when main beam are on but are dull, we checked fuses as when flashing headlights with no lights on it's flashing the drives light main and the full beams, there us a clicking coming from fuse box one headlight fuse was poped but not fixed problem, any ideas? Relay?

-shane- 02 April 2011 10:52 PM

Can anyone help please

bugeyejohn 02 April 2011 11:28 PM

If there the same as the bugeye theres 2 relays in the black box in the right hand side of engine bay. There power feeds for both sides swap them and see what happens?

-shane- 02 April 2011 11:39 PM

Done this buddy tried friends relays that work,

If it was just bulb I would understand but to bring full beams on to but dim I don't get it

Could be the wiring itself, check to see if it has blackened under the insulation - maybe carry out a resistance check if you have a multi-meter:wonder:

-shane- 02 April 2011 11:45 PM

I don't have a multi meter I'll check wiring, it's strange there were on and working took car out for 5/10 mins and that was it

JonMc 02 April 2011 11:46 PM

I had this on an old nissan were it drew so much current that it melted the plug on the lights:(

-shane- 02 April 2011 11:57 PM

That doesn't sound good, when u say melted the plug were would I look?

I've got Aztec performance hids been in about 6 months with no problems

bugeyejohn 02 April 2011 11:58 PM

All you can do is check the wires or earths without a meter, really you need to check the 12v feeds and make sure your getting good earths fed in and no power shorting into them, are they standard bulbs?Hopefully its not cooked wires and its something simple.

That's different then, are the HIDs main and dipped beam?

If the ballast has failed you'll not get the current you need, again swap all the HID parts left to right and see if the symptoms are the same.

When checking the plugs, just pull them off and any problems with current draw/heat will be obvious. Check the connectors for rust, and when looking at the wire it should be clean looking copper - if it is black or has any sort of deposit then it needs further investigation.

I have hids just on my main beam driving lights not on my full beams these are standard

Can I just disconnect the ballast and swap them over

JonMc 03 April 2011 08:21 AM

Yes, just swap away:thumb:

-shane- 03 April 2011 11:52 AM

I've swapped them over and have made no difference, I've checked all fuses, earth points and wiring. Is there a relay for high and low beam?

Not as far as i know, theres proberly a added relay that sends power to the ballasts but there not always fitted.

Just had another check and once again it's poped the passenger side 15amp fuse????

johned 03 April 2011 04:19 PM

Bad earths?.

JonMc 03 April 2011 04:21 PM

Don't you just hate it when that happens, had my dash in bits last week, multimeter out, re-wiring all over the place because the stereo stopped working. About an hour later realised the alarm wasn't working and neither was the interior light. Stereo fuse under the dash was fine, but the cabin fuse under the bonnet had blown:cry:

bugeyejohn 03 April 2011 04:40 PM

Try swapping the bulbs over and see if the other fuse/fault moves you might have a shorting one.

I thought about putting a normal bulb in on the passenger side, is it possible I've knocked the bulb filament out?

Like I say lights were fine when we left then after a 5 min drive round b roads to check suspension was ok we pulled back on drive and noticed it

bugeyejohn 03 April 2011 04:50 PM

If your blowing fuses i doubt that would be the filiment gone but sometimes they have been known to short down in the base of the bulb drawing of too much power and blowing the fuse.

similar problem

I seem to be having a very similar problem. I realize this thread is a couple years old, but if the OP is around would like to know if it was ever resolved and how...

In my case, we noticed the passenger headlight was out and replaced both bulbs. After putting in the new bulbs the passenger light is still out and we noticed the parking light on the same side is also out. High beam turns on but seems dimmer than the other side.
