dump valve decision

okay so i have a baileys dump valve on my wrx classic and the moment and i know it will sound really chavvy, but instead of the loud woosh, i want the flutter niose i have heard before, its running 20psi of boost with a remap from jolly green giant. what do i buy to buy or swap with the dump valve to have that niose ?
thanks
alex

Hi there depend which turbo you have,if you have older model of VF which are very fragile. If you have TD04-TD05 or any from newer model of VF you will OK run DV delete/dvless...

Mate, I replaced Baileys on standard OEM one. What a DIFFERENCE !!! I'll never put any aftermarket DVs again. Car is running more smooth and MPG is much better too !

Coffin Dodger 17 March 2011 05:14 PM

The flutter noise is due to not having any dump valve. On lifting off the throttle the incoming air flow hits the closed throttle and bounces back towards the turbo. The fluttering noise is the air going the wrong way through the turbo causing the compressor blades to stall.

So assuming you're turbo is up to it all you need is a blanking plate to cover the hole after the dump valve is removed (assuming its the type fixed to the intercooler, if not the just a plug for the hose.).

alex_impreza 17 March 2011 05:19 PM

okay i have a TD-05 turbo, so all i need to do is dissconnect the dump valve and plug the tube? will it cause it any damage even though its running 20psi?

thanks
alex

alex_impreza 17 March 2011 05:23 PM

just had a quick look and my dump valve is bolted to my polished sti intercooler and has a tube going to the in car boost gauage and a wire of that going to the head,

suggestions much appriecated guys

btw i noticed someone said better mpg this really has my ears open

thanks a lot guys
alex

alex_impreza 17 March 2011 05:25 PM

also where can i get a blanking plate from?

sorry for all the questions
alex

alex_impreza 17 March 2011 06:16 PM

could i just buy a standard recirc dump valve and itll have the same effect as a flutter?

no standard will give you no sound.

musso2010 17 March 2011 07:22 PM

My std one gives me some noise, does that mean that maybe it is damaged?

arumdevil 17 March 2011 07:28 PM

depends what air filter you have. on my legacy with standard airbox+panel filter you can hear nothing from inside the car, and maybe a slite low pitched rush from outside. With a cone filter you can hear it a lot more, or still standard but with a leak from intercooler hose it sounds like a dump valve...

alcazar 17 March 2011 08:03 PM

BETTER mpg?
How is that supposed to work?

DV delete is all well and good until it does irreperable damge to the trubo, and with it, possibly, the engine.

Up to you, of course, it's your car.

There are always those who say, "go for it!", or, "Hey, I've been doing that for N years and mine's been great!", but THEY won't be helping with any repair bills:(

LoftyMan 17 March 2011 09:06 PM

What are the dump valve which are good for the Subaru? Are they the ones that recuirculate? Does anyone know which will work but not be detrimental to the engine or turbo?

Thanks.

alcazar 17 March 2011 09:17 PM

Any recirc valve, like the OE one fitted by Subaru.

Unless you are running huge power, or the OE valve is faulty, (unlikely), use that one.

If you are using a panel filter, it's fairly quiet, but once you start tuning and move to a cone filter it's quite loud.

DO be careful, thouigh, cone filters are NOT good for Scoobs except under certain conditions, so take advice first;)

tony de wonderful 17 March 2011 09:22 PM

Flutter will give more lag, what is the point!?

The recirc ones, which one do you recommend. Noob question but what is a OE valve? If this the one that came with it originally?

Thanks

Ive got a TIAL on mine and it gives a very nice subtle 'churp' mate.
Also looks the bollocks as well:D

Turbosmart do a dv that gives more of a chatter sound rather than a wosh.

they come with recirc ones as standard. OE stands for Original Equipment.

LoftyMan 17 March 2011 09:45 PM

I dident even realise there was a OE valve on it as I dont ever hear it.

You wouldn't as its recirc type mate which is dumping the air back into the turbo inlet not the atmosphere which is the type you hear.

arumdevil 17 March 2011 09:55 PM

You can still hear re-circ type valves depending upon the nature of the intake.

The re-circ on my Skyline is pretty loud with a POD filter.

tony de wonderful 17 March 2011 10:04 PM

Get the one that sounds like a duck's quack. :)

LoftyMan 17 March 2011 10:04 PM

Thanks guys, can I get one similar to the recirc one but also so it allows some air to escape to give a small sound aswell? Best of both worlds :)

Im pretty sure that turbo smart do a dual type dump valve mate.

You will only hear it with a cone/mushroom etc type filter, with standard airbox it is hardly heard at all unless your running some serious boost or have a very quiet exhaust lol!.

LoftyMan 17 March 2011 10:12 PM

Yeah thanks guys, I dont want the bloody loud chav dump sound but a slightly louder one that what is on it as standard.
