Fast wagon options?
I've been exploring options for a ~300bhp new age sportswagon and would like to put them up here for feedback, so thanks on advance for any input
Option 1 is buy a bugeye 01/2 Sti. These are very rare and are likely to have some mileage by now. I could play the waiting game for a good one to come along 2 Upgrade a WRX. Powerstation can get 290bhp with an exhaust, filter, re-map for £1399+VAT or 320bhp with former plus a VF34 for an extra £900+VAT I don't really want to go classic Sti as the bottom end fails, plus this is the car I have now (and the bottom has failed) Option 3 Source a low mileage Sti from Japan and get it imported What do ya think? |
Hi there you can do for lot less and same amount of BHP etc.
Just have look at this options for WRX: Open source remap(Duncan@Race Dynamix or Rich@FB Tuning) £300-350 Exhaust Cobra for around £350 +fitting Panel Filter £35-£45 Walbro Pump £69 550cc injectors used for £160 VF35 or VF30 £250-£350 3 port boost solenoid £60 With this setup you will make easy 320bhp... If you consider STi Wagon, you don't need nothing from above, just remap and you will make around 330bhp-350bhp But i would recommend upgrade brakes at least pads to EBC Blue stuff NDX with Discs. I'm leaning towards going with a younger car to start with. I'm looking to keeping this car some time. Bugeyes are ~10 years old now. Perhaps go with a 06/7 last of the hawkeye wagons? Haven't ruled out getting an Sti imported though, although I really don't know anything about going about doing this, or if this option is just too risky. How much 'better' is the Sti over the WRX? |

I'd deffinately have a look at Matts sti wagon myself. It's cheap enough, by the time you've bought a decent wrx wagon and modified it to actually move it'll be more than what you'd get the sti for.
Plus my sti wagon is so much sharper and more alive feeling than the normal wrx, I love the AVCS too. It drives better in every way than the wrx, performance, handling, braking (mine is on brembos) and gearshift! Plus the interior is nicer with sti seats and clocks and you get intercooler spray etc. Also, the gearbox is future proof for power upgrades, engine will take 400+bhp too. I did a budget 300+ setup on my mates bugeye wrx and even though his car was very cheap and I found him loads of bargains it still added up to more than you'd think. If i hadn't found a bugeye sti wagon I'd have gone for a GB270 wagon in dark grey, they look very smart. Only trouble is it'd have needed a turbo swap, sti intercooler, injectors, fuel pump, exhaust and remap to make me happy with the power. I don't actually need my wagon anymore because I bought a MY00 uk turbo wagon for the mrs' and 2 practical cars aren't exactly needed. Mine sits in the bloody garage for weeks on end and only comes out for the odd trip to the park with my son. Trouble is if I ever sold it I'd regret it I'm sure, I'd struggle to ever replace it and there's bugger all else out there that comes close for the money it's worth. I did consider selling it and getting an early JDM twin scroll saloon but they hold big money and I'd be looking at an extra £4k probably and for what gain? Worth £4k extra, I doubt it. |
Used Vf35, STi pinks, 3" decat and up pipe, new Walbro fuel pump, K&N panel filter with a Zen remap will see a comfortable 320bhp. DBA discs with DS2500 pads, 24mm ARB should see a very quick A to B car.

Having been in a re-mapped 2.5 WRX, I would imagine a wagon would be quite a hoot !

The hawkeye wrxs already have the 550cc injectors, decat uppipe and VVT heads so make great power and awesome torque. |

The 04 JDM twin scroll I sold last year was a truly immense piece of engineering. 20K miles, It had been mapped to 370/360 and with all the suspension mods (lowered, ALK, roll centre correction, ARB's) gave huge handling confidence. Very big problem though - it did everything so well you had to be going waaaay too fast to have fun in it :cuckoo: Worth an extra 4? - absolutely |
Buy that Sti import. Its got everything you need, and a 6 speed box. I went the wrong way and bought a WRX, It has cost me fortunes to get it up to Sti spec. If you want more than 360+ then buy a Sti. If you only want 350, buy a WRX. Simples..... But my money would be on the bugeye Sti all day.

As above, the JDM was 370 and that was a little too much really for what I'm after in a daily drive (can't believe I've just said that) |
