cambelt? Engine wont run without that, do you mean the alternator belt?

subaruian 01 February 2011 10:13 PM

belt at front of engine mate just behing rad as such

ian

djquest 01 February 2011 10:15 PM

sounds like alternator belt mate.

subaruian 01 February 2011 10:16 PM

is that good or bad?

ian

djquest 01 February 2011 10:17 PM

its a cheap fix compared to cam belt snapping and killing the engine.

mike h 01 February 2011 10:18 PM

good, just means your battery wont charge and you have no power steering.

mike h 01 February 2011 10:19 PM

Simple fix, just find out what was rubbing the belt before you put a new one on.

DJ_Jon 01 February 2011 10:20 PM

It's a lot better than the cambelt snapping. Just get a new alternator belt, should take 10 mins to change, job done :thumb:

subaruian 01 February 2011 10:20 PM

just to 100% make sure as im a numptey where is the cambelt located?
so i know ive got the right one

£9 for a new belt, just brought one myself today :D just get replaced or it wont charge your alternator which equals flat battery.

Cambelt is actually behind the covers underneath the alternator at the front of the engine.

djquest 01 February 2011 10:22 PM

your cambelt should be hidden behind the plastic cambelt covers.

The camblet is just behind the radiator, hidden. It has a plastic cover over it. where your crank is. when u look down your engine near the rad ull see a plastic cover underneath is your cambelt.

subaruian 01 February 2011 10:27 PM

just had a look so its the belt you can see moving which is the alternater belt? and alternator is on right had side of engine with small pulley on the left?

ian

DJ_Jon 01 February 2011 10:31 PM

Does your car have aircon? The small pulley at the top is the alternator, on the right is the aircon pump & on the left is the power steering pump.

just a quickie on the cambelt front -

On some cars, if the cambelt snaps, the engine is fine because the valves clear the pistons even when the crank is turning. i assume this is not the case on a scooby engine, and the valves will foul the pistons if the belt goes?

You need to make sure which belt has gone first, it will be either the aircon or the alternator belt.

Does the car have aircon?

Its not so much the pistons that are the problem. The valves will meet in the middle and smash into eachother... Nasty!

Forget e-bay, ring round local factors, it will probably be the same price, decent quality and available today.

subaruian 02 February 2011 11:43 AM

will do thanks is there any think i should take off to put belt on? or is it a straight forward job?

Thanks ian

trogg 02 February 2011 12:16 PM

You need to loosen the adjuster bolts, but it's pretty straight forward.

I did mine a few weeks ago.
