Thermostat

Worth changing? im fitting a new alloy rad, hoses and doing throttlebody bypass mod, whilst the coolant is drained is it worth replacing the thermostat for a new OE one whilst im there? or a cooler running one?

Car has done 88k and is standard power until remap later this year. :thumb:

i would defo change save you the head ache if it went funny later mate zero sports 1s are good but pricey

topshot 17 January 2011 01:28 PM

Thats what im thinking, its £55 for zero sport Cooler stat or £28 for subaru one from dealers, is it worth the extra £25? seems a lot for what it is?

Got a brand new standard stat here :)

EngineMapper @ Group B Motorsport 17 January 2011 02:28 PM

Definately replace now rather than having to do it all again later. Go standard new replacement. No need to run cooler ones on road cars.

Bigbob3000 17 January 2011 02:30 PM

Deff. look at a new stat...One that fails and stays open, not closed. The Z/S one and Grimspeed one both do...
Grimspeed one is only $50, looks like the seal they provide is a bit crap though...

cheers need it for thursday though latest, so that grimmspeed is a no go. Seems people are split over OE or Zerosports cooler :wonder:

Do the Subaru ones stay shut if they fail then?

alcazar 17 January 2011 03:08 PM

Before spending big money, I'd ring a couple of local motor factors. Probably get a decent one for under £10.

topshot 17 January 2011 05:26 PM

Euro car parts have one £16, Facet Thermostat? will the quality be same as subaru one?

topshot 18 January 2011 01:21 PM

They have

Yes, Subaru are unlikley to make their own as it is. And VERY unlikely to use a dear one.
Even the window switches are branded, "Nissan".

topshot 18 January 2011 01:46 PM

nice one cheers, anyone help me on which coolant to buy (as posted above)?

alcazar 18 January 2011 03:14 PM

You can use virtually ANY decent modern anti-freeze, just DON'T mix the types. It can cause sludging and waterway blockage.

Mine came from a local factors, not dear, suitable for an alloy engine and with corrosion inhibitor.

So either of the above would do.

topshot 18 January 2011 03:43 PM

Reading about and it seems newer OAT antifreeze can cause problems in older cars with heater matrix, destroying seals, gaskets etc :wonder:

The Rig 18 January 2011 05:59 PM

Be careful when buying the pattern thermostats, when i was buying, some of the pattern ones are smaller than the genuine one and also the seal can differ in thickness, some pattern ones do not come with a new seal either.

i opted for the genuine one and seal for £25,seems pedantic but it wasnt a job i wanted to do twice for the sake of £10 difference

and yes,the new OAT stuff can froth up in classics and cause issues,if you have a 2001 onwards impreza, you should be o.k with the later antifreeze

its a MY00 classic, currently got Standard blue 2 year stuff in but most places locally only stock the newer types i linked to?

The Rig 18 January 2011 06:05 PM

2 options,

1.retain fluid lost when removing the pipes/stat etc, i also removed the rad, found it easier to then
2. buy the proper stuff and re-do the antifreeze at a later date, local halfords ?

dont want to use old coolant as the rad is damaged by a big stone so crap might have got in it.

I looked at halfords antifreeze but it states
Silicate (IAT)based Standard technology

Subaru recommend an anti freeze that is free from amine/phosphates, silicate and nitrite.

:wonder:

alcazar 18 January 2011 06:53 PM

Halfords is a no-no for this sort of stuff, unless you have a spare arm and leg to pay with :D

Look up motor factors on yell.com

topshot 18 January 2011 07:13 PM

Cheers located a comma stockist now that i didnt know even existed, only 6 miles away so will go in tomorrow.

If anyone is after a decent alloy rad coolpartsuk on ebay supplied mine and its fantastic, loads better than the standard rad! :thumb:
