James May's Man Lab

Tonight at 9pm BBC2, could be good tv:

Your average male used to be able to make
himself useful, says James May, "but within a
generation he's been reduced to a feckless,
bed-wetting, parmesan-shaving imbecile".

James should not judge everybody by his own standards!

Should be worth a watch. At least I can get the wife back fro having the X-Factor on for the last 45 mins.

its only started and i feel Mr May has sold himself out on this one.:(

beef-on-the-bone 31 October 2010 10:16 PM

quite liking it

Simon C 31 October 2010 10:25 PM

Entertaining.

Its not that hard to bull boots, just time consuming. I hated it, never had the patience.

The train set thing is well ,just a bit absurd

belliott69 31 October 2010 11:22 PM

some corny bits but still more enjoyable than most ****e on telly these days.

hutton_d 01 November 2010 12:00 AM

Only caught the last 15 mins but now got a yearning for a fish finger sannie .... :thumb: Though mine ensures I get plenty of salt on the fish fingers rather than his home-made *stuff* ... :notworthy

Bit of a sellout to split the bomb disposal item up over 3 sections. Pandering to the media types who want to tempt us to sit through a boring bit so we can see what comes later. There shouldn't be any boring bits.

Agree that the railway system just seemed out of place and wrong. Didn't even show how to put it together and wire it up.

Jaybird-UK 01 November 2010 06:36 AM

It could have been a great program but ended up a mish mash of self indulgent randomness

boxst 01 November 2010 10:42 AM

I quite enjoyed it, although i also felt that it was a little bit too random and that the program was trying too hard.

Perhaps it'll get better during the series.

Turned it off after 15 minutes. Watching someone polish boots, not exactly gripping stuff..

I actually thought it was a good point, I hadnt ever used a wet cloth to buff,

Was a tad weird but has to be better then some of the rubbish they do put on,
It was only the first show so could improve.

corradoboy 02 November 2010 07:42 PM

I found it flat and lacking too. Shame, as Mays usual offerings have been very good so far.

Exactly - now that James May has been designated "good telly" (because he really is!) the "meeja tipes" jump onto the bandwagon with the "spread as little content as possible over as long as possible" and "play at least five different musical tracks per minute as loudly as possible" production opportunities

Good honest (and educational) TV no longer exists, and even the BBC keep inserting "kaaaarmin' aarrp" every five minutes to allow for commercial breaks when a programme is sold to Discovery or whoever :(

Misleading thread title

I thought May had a bizarre transgendered medical condition :freak3::D

Apart from C4 marketing 'new series' and having half of them repeats with 3 minutes of additional footage before the end credits, this annoys me most about TV today.

Jamz3k 14 November 2010 09:55 PM

What an utterly **** programme this is!! It would seem Mr May has taken a leaf out of Hammonds book and just signed up for anything that pushes his Top Gear persona.

Jaybird-UK 14 November 2010 10:06 PM

Watched the first, no intention of watching any further. Dire.

corradoboy 14 November 2010 10:10 PM

Yup, forgot about it after first. Might give it a look if I get really bored.

Bubba po 14 November 2010 11:13 PM

Have to agree. It's crap. And it could have been so good.

boxst 14 November 2010 11:44 PM

The first one I gave as a go as I thought he'd be settling in, the second one was worse. I'm not sure whether I'm going to bother with the one on the iPlayer from this evening.

Shame.

In the words of the immortal man himself....

sod off... :D

Real manism, as we all know, is being able to construct a superb memix cobbled together from a fading rock star's bellowing and a classic break beat.

Hence, I give you:
