DIY maintenance
Ok, so up to now I've managed the change radiator hoses for silicon ones, oil and filter and gearbox oil.
I am planning to do the diff oil and fuel filter myself and maybe pads and discs when needed. What other mods or maintenance could I carry out myself which isnt going to be really difficult? I am really enjoying getting my hands dirty and have saved a few quid in labour to boot:thumb:. |
spark plugs, a task most people is hard on the boxer engine but it really isn't

TBH I was going to steer away from them, was worried about getting them cross threaded or something. I'll have a dig for a thread and see what I think.

It's all down to equipment, confidence and experience mate. I trained and worked as a mechanic in my younger days so feel i can do most of the jobs on mine. In truth, mine only sees a garage at MOT time. I would rather spend money on buying the tools/equipment to do the job than hand it over for labour charges.
Things like routine servicing/maintainence is easy for some, where others will not even contemplate it. Then you have jobs like timing belt change and turbo swaps, jobs that have the average owner running straight to the garage. There are plenty of guides around to help you out, and there are always experienced people more than willing to advise you on the correct route. Read and research in full before you start swinging the spanners, it will save you both time and money. Good luck in whatever job you choose to undertake next.:thumb: |
Brake fluid I will no doubt do when it needs pads or discs or something, easier to do in one hit I guess. Air filter is no problem, easy enough to sort.
Timing belt seems a bit scary to be honest, but then I may feel more confident when it comes due. Thanks for the thoughts guys. |
