GC8 Impreza EZ30 Twin Turbo

There were some pictures leaked around, of the twin turbo engined GC8 Impreza, being built by RA Motorsport for a customer abroad.

Despite the serious setbacks and unforeseen problems with suppliers and letdowns from people they relied upon to get the car finished in time - the car is now complete, fully mapped, tried at the track, and up and running. That makes it, to the best of my knowledge - the first Twin Turbo EZ30 engined GC8 in the world - correct me if i'm wrong there, but i'm pretty sure it's the first one in Europe.

What i'm pretty certain is that it's among the most powerful ones.

Few pics to get you started, until i get a hold of some official results and time slips.

very nice :thumb: is the car over here yet ?

grahamc 01 September 2010 09:09 PM

Would love to know how much that cost.... where will the car be based, got to see that run!!!

Pereca 01 September 2010 10:45 PM

@ABW

Is there car over...where exactly? It's right where it's supposed to be, in Belgrade, Serbia.

Nice bodykit, btw. Didn't think much of it, honestly, but at the end it turned out to look brutal :notworthy

As for the runs, it will be well documented as i plan to visit a few events in Hungary, Austria, etc - possibly even Santa Pod next year.

prodriverules 01 September 2010 10:48 PM

nice build there mate, very neat and tidy, looks abit of a buggar to work on the engine with all that under the hood lol

Pereca 01 September 2010 11:04 PM

You'd be surprised to see actually how much space is there. I don't plan to work on it anyway :lol1:

prodriverules 01 September 2010 11:08 PM

nice one, looks really trick mate and i would think it would shift abit to:norty:

bioforger 01 September 2010 11:46 PM

fark! looks like a bentley with that massive front mount though lol

Pereca 02 September 2010 12:02 AM

I knew someone was going to mention that sooner or later

Yes, i suppose it does, no way around it i'm afraid...

frayz 02 September 2010 12:14 AM

My god thats ugly!
At least it has a TT 6 pot redeaming feature, well done on the engine build :D

Pereca 02 September 2010 01:46 AM

Ugly as hell, but hard as nails, who gives a s*** about the looks? :norty:

R1CH D 02 September 2010 10:38 AM

Wow, what a beast of a car. There was a twin turbo GC8 around in wales for a bit running a legacy engine. That was mental by all accounts:thumb:

V4JDMSTi 02 September 2010 10:38 AM

I'd have stuck the rad in the boot like the Zen car and then had the IC further back to aid the looks. Fair play though. I bet it goes like stink. These ABW kits get around a bit now don't they!

Jay m A 02 September 2010 11:02 AM

Interesting air filters you have there! Stay out of gravel traps

Its great to see a 6 pot in a classic, will be good to see the figure / times it can achieve :)

M444GY 02 September 2010 11:41 AM

looks pretty bonkers :freak3:

...and make the tail heavier then it needs to be? Plus, add another 10-15kg of pipes and liquid to route the coolant from the front to the back? Or at least you'd have to mess about with the roll bars as water conduits, which would not seem like a bright idea in case you had an accident, with all that water pouring over you from the bent pipes...

All that for the sake of looks? Don't think so :nono:

Btw, the wet weight (all liquids plus 20l of fuel) with drag tires is 1132kg. Not that bad, but still, lots of space for improvement. "Thought it might be lighter" i hear you say, but keep in mind the HUGE automatic gearbox, plus the twin turbo setup and all that goes with it, exhausts, etc. - that's at LEAST 50kg extra over the 4 pot setup. Well worth it, though.

Air filters are...work in progress :Whatever_

Moving the rad to the rear would help with getting nearer 50/50 weight distribution which will give better handling not worse. It looks like a dedicated track car to me so weight could be saved elsewhere to compensate for the additional pipeworks and fluids.

If the rad and pipes were situated correctly the driver wouldn't get water pouring all over them in the event of an accident. Not really any different to having a swirl pot and the lines run inside the car imo.

Aside from just looks the huge and no doubt expensive front mount could then have been protected. It'll only take 1 stone flicked up from a car in front and kiss it goodbye.

Don't get me wrong it's a great piece of engineering but those couple of bits would have made it 100% for me. I'm a believer of function over form but there's a point when things have to look right too.

frayz 02 September 2010 12:23 PM

Matt, it has an auto box.... itd a drag car. So they want the weight up front as so much will transfer to the rear on launch anyway.

Pereca 02 September 2010 12:25 PM

You'd be absolutely right in your reasoning about the rad relocation, were it not for one single thing: this is not a track car, its sole purpose and use is for drag racing, nothing else. Hence my reluctance to put any more weight over the rear axle as that would only make it squat more at the back, which is not so good for traction. The car, statically, is very nose heavy, exactly what you want on a drag car.

So, the rad had nowhere else to go but the front of the car. FMIC nees to be protected, absolutely right there...

V4JDMSTi 02 September 2010 12:43 PM

Ah this is the first I've seen of it so wasn't aware it was only going to be a drag car. :thumb:

Very interesting car i must say what sort of power does this put out?

ZEN Performance 04 September 2010 12:53 PM

A rear rad doesn't add such a huge amount of weight, it would be worth considering in the future if required. My concern with your current setup is getting the air through the intercooler and through the very thick rad and then around the engine. But only time will tell if you need to make changes, even on a drag car.

We expect to see around 900 plus nitrous, when we get it up and running on full boost on E85

Nicely noticed, the thick radiator, that's one of the main points still giving us trouble - heating issues. Nothing major, but still...Rad will be changed to thinner one with stronger pull fans. Also we will need to redo the secondary, cabin coolant circuit bypass, as i fear we might have made a small mistake in there somewhere....

The problem we are having at the moment is that the car gets too hot for my liking, from time to time. Thermostat is a bit too hot, so we took it out for the time being, not to cause restriction - still car gets too hot, even while driving, and it immediately cools down after we douse the rad with some cool water. Which might indicate insufficient speed or quantity of water circulation through the rad, as it obviously accumulates heat. Now, that could be down to the fact that it is too thick, which will be corrected soon. The other reason might be the incorrect bypass of the cabin cooling circuit, we might have disrupted the flow around the engine and interconnected something we shouldn't have, creating a swirl, or a potential restriction point...

Does anybody have an exploded, clear or self-explanatory diagram of H6 secondary cooling circuit water circulation diagram, or the whole cooling system diagram, with directions indicated clearly, so i can double check?

Mental. :D
I would have to sort that ugly intercooler out though (IMO), at least so it doesn't protrude above the bumper!
Other than that, awesome :thumb:

How much did the video cost? Nothing at all :D

tempop1 16 September 2010 11:58 PM
