track tyres

Ok, got a set of 17s sitting in the workshop, I now need to decide which tyres to put on them.

Car is 2002 prodrive sti currently standard power, going for 420ish in the next couple of months.

Purpose, track use only...

What would you go for and where do you get them?

grahamc 06 June 2010 09:35 PM

r888s seem like the obvious choice, but they are a compromise as they are road and track. I am happy to change the wheels when I arrive and before I depart.

C8 DHC 04WRX 06 June 2010 10:58 PM

There are generally more available at the end of the racing season - autumn/winter is the best time to buy as most get snapped up quick at this time of year.

Some sold on ebay the other day:

Please fit a baffled sump if using slicks on circuit....

dunx

P.S. I use R888's at Blyton ( rallycross circuit ), and enjoy !

D1CCY 07 June 2010 09:49 AM

In addition to Dunx's recommendation either fit a fuel swirl pot system or keep at least half a tank of fuel in the car to prevent fuel starvation and possible engine damage on long right handers.

Why would that happen?

dunx 07 June 2010 07:12 PM

Mine gets fuel surge at 1/4 of a tank on a rallycross circuit, tight and twisty, it's due to the shape of the tank...

Oil surge is caused on long sweeping high G corners, where the oil slops up the side of the sump away from the oil pump pickup.

HTH

P.S. Hi D1CCY, have you sold her yet ?

grahamc 07 June 2010 08:05 PM

very interesting... will definitely keep this in mind, thanks!

172sport 08 June 2010 09:35 AM

Had fuel surge at 1/2 a tank here, now got a swirl pot so ill see how that works out.

Is quite easy to add a swirl pot? What do you need? approx cost?

Hi Dunx, Sadly no, still for sale. On PH for 10800 but I'd take 10000. There's 15000 of desirable mods, 3 sets of wheels, new 888s etc plus the car, just sitting in garage. Have had some interest but no sale yet.

RAW Striker is a lot faster both round corners and in a straight line (only 500kg), quite a hoot. Will be at Elvington 19th June if you fancy a ride.

Cheers Diccy.

dunx

P.S. Would you consider selling a set of wheels/tyres ? :)

Hi Dunx,

1.8 Zetec, blueprinted with silly cams and twin 40DCOEs, Quaife close ratio straight cut gearset in T9 box. Escort MkII live axle and drum brakes at back although you wouldn't know when driving it. About 165 bhp/150 ft-lb. Plenty for 500kg. Tyres last well which is more than you can say for the Scoob.

Cheers, Diccy.

dunx 09 June 2010 09:52 PM

Just checking....

So I need 495 bhp and 450 ft.lb.s just to have a hope of keeping up....

:lol1:

D1CCY 10 June 2010 10:43 AM

You might need more as it can manage about 1.6G in corners. It has a phoenix body kit and flat undertray and diffuser so it produces a fair bit of grip. Such a joy to reel other cars in around corners.

As for "at my age", I have my bus pass, surely you're not as old as me.

Cheers, Diccy.

dunx 10 June 2010 09:18 PM

I'm just short of talent then..... ?

LOL

dunx

D1CCY 11 June 2010 10:04 AM

I'm a bit short there as well. Finding it much harder to "get it (remotely) right" with new car. Also miss PAS and servo, my arms ache after a good day at track.

Diccy.

dunx 11 June 2010 05:28 PM

Gym for you then matey !

LOL

dunx

P.S. My Imp was all the workout I ever needed, 175/50/13 A008's on the front....

grahamc 11 June 2010 10:25 PM

DAMMIT!! Just missed those :(

D1CCY 12 June 2010 09:59 AM

Imp, wasn't that the one with about 10 deg of positive camber at the front.
