Type-R Remap, only making 285bhp....

Took the car to Zen Performance today to remap the apexi power Fc as Id had a few upgrades done. Paul did a great job and was very helpful and the car does feel quick and responsive, Im just a little bit disappointed with the power produced. The car has a Vf35 turbo, full 3inch de-cat, autobahn88 TMIC, walbro fuel pump and a recent engine re-build. It produced a max figure of 285.6bhp @ 5,805rpm and 294.3lbft @ 4,222rpm. Boost max was 1.5 bar. Anybody had similar power with these sort of mods?

I'd expect to be seeing more power at 1.5 bar - Was that boost held out right through the rev range, or does it tail off at the top?

What did Paul reckon about it?

Have you got a Power/Torque/Boost/AFR graph that you can post up?

oxscooby 11 May 2010 06:42 PM

The boost does tail off to about 1.1-1.2 bar. Will see if i can post up the graph. Paul said it may be the vf35 but he wasnt sure.

FB Tuning 11 May 2010 06:46 PM

Change back to your VF24 and tweak the map to find out if that's the issue :)

oxscooby 11 May 2010 07:15 PM

would do but i sold it to a bloke in austria

dynamix 11 May 2010 07:39 PM

Looks like the autobahn TMIC is the issue - Paul looks to have reduced boost to account for the very poor job that the tmic does in charge cooling.

Great torque though and that is what counts.

get a fmic and you will see a good increase I reckon (or even fit a proper tmic)

pooeater 11 May 2010 07:51 PM

vf35/1.8bar
gems ecu
fmic
inducion k&n
full H&S exhaust
gt spec headers/uppipe
740cc inj
forge actuator
forged 2.0l built by ZEN
made 350bhp/390lbft
hope this helps

scoobiewrx555 11 May 2010 08:24 PM

Oxscooby...What size injectors are you running?? 440cc??

It might even be your injectors are maxing out because he is running it rich due to potentially as duncan says, the inneficiency of your autobahn fmic.

Peak power on the VF35 is around 5,500rpm with peak torque around 4200-4,500rpm. That's par for the course and your graph is as expected. I used to run a VF35 and made c.350bhp at c.20psi (1.37bar) but that was with 550cc injectors and an STi TMIC.

99greenwagon 11 May 2010 08:58 PM

hi mate, personally i would also be a little dissapointed,i would say the intercooler/turbo is probably the issue,if the turbo is ok,then i would have thought that the autobahn as mentioned above is restricting it.

im running stock uk99 turbo 2000 engine.
vf35 (1.42 bar)
ninja sports cat downpipe
decat centre(2.5")
custom h&s 3" backbox
walbro pump
afpr
sti8 tmic
3 port boost solinoid.
ecutek

car produced 315/320,bere in mind that its still on standard headers/up pipe and oe 440cc injectors. hope that helps a little.:)

oxscooby 11 May 2010 09:16 PM

Right, im gonna stick the original topmount back on and see if it feels any different. Thanks for the advice guys.

dynamix 11 May 2010 09:17 PM

I dont think the original will be better - needs a good fmic

On a classic fmic is the way to go, it's better than faffing about fitting a larger TMIC and as Duncan says, the standard tmic may not be any better.

Spend some proper money abd get one of those Hybrid fmic jobbys. I hear they are very good.

99greenwagon 11 May 2010 09:25 PM

agreed, but when u say faffing about fitting sti8 tmic, its very easy to fit,.i opted for the sti8 tmic as i didnt want the front mount look on the front of the car. its a good intercooler and a good choice if u dont want to change the look of the car.....think they can cope with around 350bhp?

oxscooby 11 May 2010 09:34 PM

I didn't really want to go down the fmic route as I've had them on previous scoob's & didn't like the extra lag

scoobiewrx555 11 May 2010 09:34 PM

STi TMIC will cope with over 400bhp+. I'm putting 360-370 though mine at the moment amd it copes very nicely.

I'm thinking v1-v4 classics and major faffing about with larger TMIC's but later 5/6 cars use something similar to the newage WRX TMIC so STi will fit straight on. That's would be a good alternative.

The mapper would have been able to tell you if the intercooler wasn't up to the job as each run would have produced less power as the heat soak effect took place.

Are we sure this just isn't power at the wheels rather than the fly ?

pooeater 12 May 2010 09:51 AM

what fuel u putting in?

oxscooby 12 May 2010 12:41 PM

I'm using v-power. It's definitely the power at the wheels

belliott69 12 May 2010 12:47 PM

thats good power then i'd say mate, flywheel power will be quite a bit over 300. also how does it drive, remember there only pub figures and all rolling roads will tell you a different power to what another one will, its how it drives.:thumb:

About right then, not bad power at all.

Are you sure, though?! I'm sure the graph does actually show corrected flywheel bhp. :wonder:, because had mine mapped there and it showed 282bhp on the print out, which is defo flywheel bhp (as I'm only running v.1 slanty TMIC/380cc inj at the mo).

But if it is wheel bhp, then you're okay :) - as the corrected flywheel figure will indeed be around 356bhp! (i.e. if allowing for a c.20% tranny loss).

Claaarkio 12 May 2010 12:58 PM

This should be the first question when talking about plotted power graphs, hense it was my first question on the post!

Power at the wheels is always more acurate as the fly wheel power is an educated guess, but it sounds better which is why we all like it so much!

oxscooby 12 May 2010 05:47 PM

Sorry guys, wheel power is 248.2bhp, engine hp is 285.6

jameswrx 12 May 2010 06:16 PM

Torque is nice and you've got a good length power band there. I'd rather have that graph than (for example) a more 'pub friendly' 310bhp peak at 7krpm (with short band) and 260ftlb torque.

scoobiewrx555 12 May 2010 06:19 PM

Most tuners with RR dyno's will give you corrected figures reflecting estimated engine bhp. I think Paul's Dastek Dyno normally gives slightly pessimistic figures or it's the way Paul has it set up, so you may be closer to 300 engine bhp on somehting like a Dyno Dynamics RR. RR operators though can and sometimes do massage the figures to make it look good. Paul at Zen doesn't fall into that category.

Do it right and do it once.
Hybrid FMIcs from £270. Job sorted.

I was "convinced" that was indeed the case ;) lol

I'd be prepared to condemn the Ab88 IC - eps. with it being 'only' a TMIC to boot! It appears to be limiting airfow/charge temps a la the crappy OEM v.1/2 slanty job! :(

As harvs says, whack on one of his Hybrid FMICs. ;)

Or if you must have a TM, then defo fit an STi Blobeye one (or Hawkeye, if they fit). At least you know where you stand with these OEM TMICs...

Claaarkio 13 May 2010 11:26 AM

The AB88 FMIC seem to work if you want a cheap FM. My bro got 491bhp at 1.5 bar on his 2.5 motor. I got 301 on my last RR at 1bar (2.0 TD05) with the same FMIC.
