I use Mobil1 15/50 Fully in my '97 WRX STi but no idea if it's the recommended oil.

I believe "the book" suggests 10/40 Semi but I always go fully, but that's just me!

Rich.

Nothing wrong with the semi synthetic ;) you can go for a fully synth, bit of a waste of time on any engine over the 60-70k mark really as the wear is already there that its protecting against, but if you want to run a 10w40 then motul do a very good one, the 15w50 is a good summer oil, bit thick on cold start ups in winter though unless you give it a good 30 secs or so before driving off.
You can go as low as a 5w40 but not a 0 cold or a 30 hot or any 30 hot rated oil tbh, 40 min and 50 max, 5 cold to 15 cold, ie 10w50, 5w40, 15w50 etc.

running castrol edge sport fully synthetic 10w60 in my 98 sti , how come max is 50 for heat tony ?

oilman 28 April 2010 01:53 PM

10w-60 is a bit thick when hot and doesn't flow quickly, meaning that heat isn't transferred away as quickly as it should be. A 10w-50 is a better choice than a 10w-60.

A 10w-40 is fine for day to day normal use in a classic, go for a 10w-50 if you drive it hard or track it

hmm may go for 10-50 then i drive hard sometimes (5K revs) but not to often depends what mood im in :) mileage is only 55K as well so fully may be a good idea i take it, just wish i could get rid of my piston slap tappets what ever the hell it is it makes me PARANOID!!!!

oilman 28 April 2010 03:34 PM

a 10w-50 is a little thicker than normal and can help with piston slap.

Thanks oil man def guna try that then, i see your southwest.. where abouts? im off to Rowleys tonight to get my oil and new rocker cover gasket, does it matter which oil filter i choose?

oilman 28 April 2010 04:34 PM

We're in Redruth, Cornwall. If that's too far we've got free shipping on orders over £30 until next Tuesday.

As long as a filter meets the OEM specs, it's fine. All they do is stop big bits in the oil, so they don't need to do anything special.
