Colleague has 1, 55 plate with 50k miles on it. 2 months after the warrenty ran out, he got raped for £900 for a new turbo.

Yeah there not cheap when they break down but what car is

The only real expense to Alfas out of warranty is thinking its a good idea to bring them to a main dealer if something goes wrong. The dealer network is rubbish and their mechanics in general (but not all) don't know a thing. Knowing a good independant Alfa Mechanic will save you a fortune and will have an Alfa running as reliable as any other marquee.

Do you know any in the northeast that could make my decision easy

It's a rebadged Vauxhall with a Fiat sourced engine (which is good). Nice looking but you pay a lot more for worse handling and reliability.

They are one marque I'd avoid.

Err, a rebadged Vauxhall? where did you hear that from? It uses the same fiat derived platform as the 147(which its based on) & 156.

On the GT the front wishbones wear quickly but are easily replaced. Biggest issue is the waterpump throwing the cambelt, hence they should be replaced with a scheduled cambelt change, something the independants do but main dealers don't.
I had a 156 2.4 and have now got a 2.4 159 which is fantastic. I drove a secondhand GT jtdma found it underpowered however it might have been a rogue. They're easily remapped to 180-200 bhp.
If you're the kind of person who'll take the car into a garage everytime there's a warning light on, it'll cost you a fortune, if you can wait 'til tomorrow when it'll disappear you'll love it. Dare to be different !
