Sport to turbo conversion?
 

Basically im 20 years old and own an impreza sport. The insurance companys wont come anywhere near me for a wrx or higher(£7500 best price). Has anyone done or heard of a sport to turbo conversion? If so can you shed some light onto the subject please? I have the need for speed lol. cheers.

if they wont insure you for a wrx they deffinately wont insure you for a turbo conversion

Ive converted a sport to an Sti and with all mods declared at 19 its 1650 fully comp with 2 years ncb.

Not worth the expense IMO. I have heard of Sports being fitted with superchargers but again stupid money. Save your pennies for a few years until someone will insure you for a reasonable price.

Its not worth the time or hassle, your basically replacing everything except the shell.

build up your no claims and wait a few years like everyone else has to ;)

yea you have to strip the sport to a shell and build it up with wrx and sti parts, which is long but once done insurance is cheap

How is the insurance cheap? Its a WRX in all but the name on the V5. Thats how insurance companies will see it and will charge appropriately.

like i said earlier i can get insurance on mine for 1650 declaring engine turbo gearbox body work etc etc its stupid really because its now just a wrx lol which would cost me 7.5k to insure

think i might have to do that. i think insurance is a big con. £7500 for a car thats only worth £2500. perhaps i should buy one of those little yellow fiat box's lol.

Is it like a standard WRX or have you done mods like someone starting with a WRX would? (does that make sense??)

Unfortunately though, the other persons car (and injuries) that you plough into at 120mph is likely to be worth a bit more than £2500......

Young, inexperienced driver - you're going to get screwed on insurance. Thats just the way things are, always have been, and likely to be. Sorry.

Its the same for everyone, just enjoy your youth & buy a faster impreza when you are a bit older & have some more no claims discount under your belt. Insurance companies see you as a very high risk: 20yr old + High Performance car = FAIL

I remember being 19 & getting a quote on a mk1 XR2 (not exactly fast by todays standards) - the car was worth £500, the quote was £1800 - this was back in 1992.

Don't bother with the turbo conversion, its more grief than its worth.

hi guys m8 your best bit would be to just sell the sport as its not worth the hastle i am 23 with 0 ncb and only been driving 8 months i own a my93 impreza wrx import i used to have a sport and wanted a conversion but once looked in to it the cost outweighs the benifits plus insurance will be higher on a conversion also you would need a enginers report to sell the sport and get a wrx or turbo 2000 m8 a lot less hastle this has been asked many times before (by me lol ) and its just not worth it

Hello! I'm currently doing this to mine! Conversion cost me 600quid plus my time, look for cheap imports with no Mot or rust issues as you won't need the shell! Then just go from there! The one I got had a clutch going and bodywork issues which didn't bother me as scoobys rip through standard clutches once you start playing with them! Like i said though best to get a whole car so you have all the bits!

Get a UK car - Turbo 2000. Much better on insurance ;)

And you will let us know how much MORE your insurance is with all mods declared than it would have been for a standard car, won't you?

Surely that negates the need of a proper insurance policy. Which is not what the OP is about...

Because I don't see the point in having a rwd impreza as a daily car, I'd rather trailer it to tracks and have some fun in it.

In your situation, I would have the mother of all STI imprezas, because I wouldn't need to insure it for road use!

As a matter of FACT, yes: it ran to 3 sides of A4, all posted to my insurers:)
