If I have an IP address of a machine how can I determine say a machine name from the IP adddress?

If you're in a corporate enviroment then use NSLOOKUP which will perform a reverse lookup in DNS
or try nbtstat -a * IP ADDRESS * edit: This only works on your network though!! :) |
Doesn't matter - just found the answer (nslookup or ping -a)
But thanks anyway Hanley :) |
this will only work if reverse DNS is configured for the Zone in question
(which by default it isn't) |

(which by default it isn't) I didn't want to start going through the ins and outs of DNS with him. :D |
