Yep no worries, that point has been covered already except.....I assume you were mapping other aftermarket ECU's already as well as using OS software for scoobs....or was it ECUedit??

not sure of the relevance but..

My original career was designing, coding and testing software for safety critical systems..
I have worked on flight controls, fuel computers, defence and attack systems, aircraft engine management etc.. for BAE systems (was GEC or British Aerospace at the time depending on the site, I worked at several as I worked for myself and contracted around the country), General Dynamics, Rolls Royce, Thales, Data systems and solutions basically all the major players in that field.
So currently Eurofighter, boeing 777, airbus, Harrier, and Lynx helicopters all fly about with bits of software in I have touched at some point.
I also had/have a strong interest in performance cars and bought a Link ecu for an Impreza I had and combined the two (considered making my own ecu for a bit but too many well priced units out there to negate the need), then GEMS ecu, then Apexi Powerfc, ESL etc etc..
I first started mapping other peoples cars as an interest and it spiralled.. I still class it as an interest/passion, just I have to charge for it and run a business otherwise I would have to do something else to pay the bills, and then I couldn't map full time and feed my interest/passion for it.
I first looked into OS so I could play with newage cars, whilst talking with ecutek as well.. in the same way as Andy and Bob are saying you need to see what competition there is and we all have the end result at heart.. and we all choose to continue using EcuTek.

Rapid Remap use OS, you'll have to look at their website.

There seems to be a lot of commonality between OS and EcuTek mappers in that the serious ones generally started purely out of interest linked to scooby ownership, then turning into an addiction and subsequent part-time to full time business :D

So you were using OS prior to EcuTek. Nice one!! :thumb:

seems to be 3 routes main routes... computers to mapping, mechnic to mapping or pure interest and no previous linked back ground imho

I think having a great interest and passion for it you have to check out all possible avenues to make sure you are giving the best possible solution and desired end result.

Likewise like you have spoke to EcuTek.

Ah good stuff, ive known mike for ages from the starlet scene on tgtt, so £650 inc vat is about right then with the dyno time?

scoobiewrx555 07 January 2010 12:16 AM

I'm an electronics engineer by qualification and habitual tinkerer for life having been brought up on unreliable oldskool machinery begging for a good seeing to!! lol.

Those were the days when life was simpler!! :)

Did you ask how much the licence was??

Seven years of subaru ownership and the use of ecutek and i still haven't a clue how much i paid for the licence, it seems to be a secret :Suspiciou

scoobiewrx555 07 January 2010 04:12 PM

Is it £150 for the licence??

I can't speak for the people who started this particular OS project, but the ethos of OS is about opening up the source code for programmers so that end users who have the knowledge can fix, contirbute and generally mess around with something and not be bound by commercial considerations (e.g. the need to keep code hidden from competitors).

The OS community (in general) still realises that people have to pay the bills, so the community have never had a problem with OS software being used to make money - the point is not to charge for the software but allow the potential to make money on the value add services that come with it (e.g. Red Hat).

Remember the famous Richard Stallman (high priest of the OS Cult) quote - "Free as in speech, not as in beer!"

I suspect (though I may be wrong) that the OS tools are distributed under a version of the GNU Public Licence (hopefully version 2). The licence mandates that a copy of the source code is included with the software when it is distributed, but doesn't say anything about what you do with the software afterwards - don't forget that Apache is OS and used by the majority of commercial web hosting companies!

joz8968 07 January 2010 04:18 PM

I thought the licence was c.£300-350 of the £650 odd - seeing as subsequent full 'unlocked' maps are around £350?

Defo agree there Simon, seems a natural progression from computers (my standpoint - although i know a lot of techies that don't know how to lift a bonnet)... i blame you for that first mapping session!! :p

The less established approach, i have found (using Nistune / TunerPro and Moates emulators) is strangely more appealing than the established route, not to mention cheaper. Not sure what is is about the .bin and .xdf files, and trudging through machine code, but it feels good when it all comes together!

Maybe its the sense of getting something for next to nothing..

As for making your own control unit, i reckon you should give it go, Megasquirt or derivative would be a great one to explore.. Would be a good read in the project section on this forum!!! Hell, i'd even get the hakko out to make the loom :)

And some of us started in the Motor Trade!
Cars, you know...

A long time ago so i hear. Mind you...so did Arthur Daley. :)

I'd say you're the one who needs the sheepskin coat out mapping in this weather!

And a lack of Motor Trade background may well explain why a very well known mapper made two long and expensive (for the customer) trips carrying his laptop in his Gucci bag and twice failed to fix a running/idle fault as it didn't occur to him to do a basic thing like check the plug gaps.
Being fair, oil is the very devil to get off nappa leather.

Never mind the map, it's important, but it's the last thing you should be doing.

Fix the sodding car first Boy..

Andy.F 08 January 2010 11:15 AM

Which function key should one press to check the plug gaps Alan ;) :D

apalmer 08 January 2010 11:23 AM

Fn F(eeler)5

scoobiewrx555 08 January 2010 11:24 AM

I wouldn't disagree with any of that Alan but there won't be any mapping done in this dodgy weather sheepskin or otherwise, and certinaly not when you're not the one in control of the car!! Bugger that!!

As for Gucci bag....not my style really. I'm more IKEA family rucksack :D

We've got three in today! as soon as Martyn's finished with the laptop, I'm going to arrange to send the logs up to Andy. For the fire in his Croft!
So Andy, if you hear a chopper coming, remember to DUCK!

I'll have you know we have that new stuff up here called electricccity

What is it with you and your chopper anyway..... :D

scoobiewrx555 08 January 2010 12:26 PM

Hope you've got plenty of change for the leccy meter. You're right in the firing line of that freezing cold easterly wind.

Still....If all else fails you could light a fire with Alan's logs and your laptop!!
