Could someone help me please....

Could someone with a blob eye around the 2003 year get me the details of their alternator please?

Just I broke my original (stupidly) and got a 2nd hand one from Grade-A subaru. But, I'm sure it is incorrect, as there are two versions of the 3 pin one. As the engine check light won't go out, and I think it is due to having the incorrect alternator on.....

One of them has only 2 Live Pins (and a dummy) and the other version needs all 3 pins. I'm not sure which mine is due to not having any details on.

If someone could get me their details that would be great!
It may look something like:
3700-AA380
23700-AA420
23700-AA450
23700-AA540
A2TB3091
A2TB5391
A2TB6991
A2TG0391

Cheers

hello matey. right, i have a 2004 Blobeye STi Type UK. Just been round to the garage and had a look at my alternator, and the only little silver lable on it reads as follows :-

N 23700 AA420
A2TB5391
3910

in that layout

Brilliant, thanks a lot! :thumb:

That's the one which uses all 3 pins! I will check mine at work (don't have a torch here), and hopefully it won't match yours, which means I have the wrong one so will be a simple fix.

Thanks again!

HT04 30 November 2009 06:22 PM

no probs :thumb:

let me know via pm how you get on.

dan

TonyBurns 30 November 2009 06:22 PM

I best not shock you on how much those alternators cost then :lol1::(

Tony:)

HT04 30 November 2009 06:23 PM

how much, just out of curiosity

dan

TonyBurns 30 November 2009 06:35 PM

Lets say you dont get much change out of £900  though they may have gone up due to the yen v pound

Tony:)

HT04 30 November 2009 06:38 PM

for an alternator !!!! blimey. im gonna start cleaning mine everyday, covering it in bubble wrap and tucking it in at night. lol. seriously tho, thats expensive. why the hell so much ? its actually a small alternator

dan

chrisdicko 30 November 2009 06:44 PM

£110 plus P+P for the new one

The working, but I think wrong used one I bought was about £40 plus VAT

HT04 30 November 2009 07:07 PM

for a genuine one chris ?

dan

chrisdicko 30 November 2009 07:26 PM

No, doubt it's the real thing, but I don't mind to be honest. As most stuff we put on our cars, it isn't genuine, but normally better than OEM anyway.

SUBARU FORESTER/ IMPREZA ALTERNATOR (A2102) on eBay (end time 12-Dec-09 14:05:39 GMT)

HT04 30 November 2009 07:34 PM

no worries chris. you cant always be sure of cross referance numbers. :(

hope you get it sorted asap. let me know how you get on tho dude.

dan

chrisdicko 30 November 2009 07:38 PM

Yeah I will do mate.

I hope the alternator which is on my car now is different to yours, as then I'm 99% sure that's my problem. Then will order a new one with the same marking as yours, and it should solve the problem.........hopefully.

Its also a very complex alternator, you cannot put a classic one on a new age STI, you will just cook the battery/cause issues as these ones have a computer chip in there that does all this on/off charging stuff, hence why its that price so not sure what you have bought Chris but I doubt it will work or if it does it could cause you problems :(

Tony:)

my 110 quid ebay one does the on /off charge thing, had it all tested at a specialist after i fitted it as i was not sure about them either at the time . in my experence genuine bargain :thumb:.

HT04 04 December 2009 09:47 AM

how did you get on chris?

dan

chrisdicko 04 December 2009 01:56 PM

Hi,
Sorry for the late reply, I've been on nights this week so I haven't been functioning properly :lol1:

The details on my alternator are:
23700AA390
A2TB299
8Y09

Which means it has the dummy pin on, so only uses 2 out of the 3 pins on the plug. That means it's the wrong one I got sent from Grade-A Subaru, but as I've had it over a month they will not replace it..

I haven't bought one yet. Thanks Rob for the input! I was a bit worried about the ebay one to be honest, as the originals are so expensive from the dealers. But I suppose if yours has lasted a year, that would do me as I could go through 9 of them over 9 years for the price of a OEM one

Thanks

handsome rob 04 December 2009 06:10 PM

Thats exactly what i thought ! ,if you ring them and ask a few Q they actually put you through to a tech bloke that really seems to know his stuff .

chrisdicko 04 December 2009 06:22 PM

Cool! Will try a £100 one then rather than a £900 to start with :)

Thanks a lot

TonyBurns 04 December 2009 06:50 PM

Well 100 quid is very cheap (note the very) anyway go for it, but ask him first what the ampage output is ;)

Tony:)

chrisdicko 04 December 2009 06:52 PM

Will do, thanks Tony. What should it be? 80A?

90A compared to 75 I believe, also think this applies to the AA420 alternator, was that your original one?

Tony:)

chrisdicko 04 December 2009 07:05 PM

Yeah I think it was the AA420. I stupidly didn't check it before I binned it, as I received the once from Grade-A and expected it to be right.

The one on ebay is only 80A :(

handsome rob 05 December 2009 02:42 PM

Looks like a trip to the dealers then mate .
i will have to hope mine does another year of constant short journeys and early morning cold starts, followed by 2/3 days with the alarm set.

HT04 05 December 2009 06:06 PM

this tony burns bloke seems to know his stuff. :D

dan

chrisdicko 09 December 2009 06:25 PM

Well the ebay special is fitted. Turned the ignition on and off about 5 times, the engine check light went away by itself, and all seems good :thumb:

Hope it lasts....

Tucker82 09 December 2009 07:00 PM

I took my alternator from my classic to a local specialist. They did a complete refurb for £92 with the Vat and stuck a years warranty on it. Was as good as new...

You cant refurb the new age (MY03 onwards) ones

Tony:(

chrisdicko 10 December 2009 02:26 PM

I don't know if mine would have been refurb-able anyway, as I took it apart, then when I was rebuilding it I snapped the two brushes inside (like a spaz).
