Think my turbo is giving up ?

when the turbo is spooling up im getting a kind of screeching noise and a kind of rattling  performance wise it seems OK does anybody know what's wrong ? Car is a 2006 STI with 44000 miles on the clock.
Didn't need this right now haven't got a pot to piss in at the moment

not normal for such a newish car. could be the actuator is broke and rattling about, but then again you would be getting problems with performance if it was that. bound to be someone on here with good advice

I hope so mate. I hate not Knowing, I'm going to ring Subaru Monday and get it looked at but was wanting some feed back from you guys :thumb:

:wonder:can you not get a specialist to "READ" the error codes first before you have subaru stitch you up like a kipper:razz:.

greatgonzo 19 September 2009 11:32 PM

Not had any fault codes come up:wonder:
What should I be looking for

I have heard of a couple of cases of cracked VF43's in Hawk STi's.

uk300scoob 19 September 2009 11:48 PM

have you ever had any exhaust heat sheilds off? or turbo heat sheild off? as above i have read on NASIOC that the housing on the back of the vf43 can crack under alot of heat. checked that maybe the turbo inlet hose has slip off or anything like that? let us know what changes you have made to your motor

greatgonzo 20 September 2009 09:55 AM

I have had a de cat down pipe but its wrapped in good quality stuff, you can actually hold the down pipe when the car is running, I will go see if there's any hoses off !

Is my turbo a VF43 or VF39  2006 STI

both housings are known to crack on these from alot of heat

greatgonzo 20 September 2009 12:01 PM

Had a look around the turbo and I can not see anything that looks wrong, no pipes off or anything. Any one got any other ideas?

greatgonzo 21 September 2009 06:37 PM

Has anyone got any more suggestions this noise is only happening when on full boost and under heavy load ie up hill :(

bluenose172 04 October 2010 10:17 PM

Did you ever find out what the issue was?

prodriverules 04 October 2010 10:24 PM

screeches under load can be the impeller catching the housing if damaged or out of balance for some reason,i had a hybrid td05 do this once that was brand new and never could find the route cause or for matter could AET turbos which was where i had it from so i eneded up sending it back 3 times and having to have a different unit.

bluenose172 04 October 2010 10:30 PM

Swapped out the TD04, noise still there. It's boost related as I ran WG pressure(6psi) and the noise goes away.

But the noise is defo coming from the turbo mate?

bluenose172 04 October 2010 10:40 PM

It's hard to identify where it is coming from tbh. The whole intake system has been pressure tested to 18psi and IC swapped out. I'm going to try a new BCS as it sounds as if it's coming from the right hand side of the engine bay.

The next step is to get it on a RR to try and identify exactly where the noise is coming from.

prodriverules 04 October 2010 10:49 PM

Could it be a vibration that sounds like a screech maybe?i only say this as i had a noise that sounded like my transmission was on its way out on over run but it turns out it was one of my intercooler pipeing[fmic]rubbing on the kick bar at the back of the engine.

bluenose172 04 October 2010 10:55 PM

I would have expected a vibration of that sort to be reproduced independant of boost though.

2.5STI 04 October 2010 11:00 PM

im getting this noise to when im in high boost mode.

mostly hear it when boosting... no boost drop on gauge. sometimes happens when i let off too?

i am running a vf43 but its not been long on and wasnt damaged.

All depends on the frequency needed to produce the noise/vibration
