They are getting fitted on monday/tuesday, when I pick it up I will have a hard drive of it then I'm dropping it off at Steven Darleys for his opinion of them. They have some big boots to fill as I was told I had to fit ex-e-tc???

Steve have you had experience with the BC's? Would be a good comparison if you or Steven Darley had, as they are in a similar price range.

Sorry I have no experience of the BC's but some of my friends do. I'm pretty sure these are a better coilover than the BC otherwise I would of just bought them!

I am interested in these for my bugeye. Does this kit allow you to adjust the ride height aswell as stiffness?

Yep they allow you to adjust the ride height, spring preload and damper stiffness. The damper adjustment has a wide range to allow you to dial the car in just how you want it. :)

They do compare to the BC RM's for specification although I'd stick my neck out and say I think the HSD is a better performing damper, and the HSD's come with camber adjustable topmounts and inverted shocks front and rear as standard, from what I've read you have to pay extra for camber adjustability on the rear of a BC.

We'll wait and see the feedback Steve comes back with! :) Hopefully later on today or tomorrow he should have something to say about them!

Incidentally we just had a couple of HSD dampers tested by Penske Racing, and they had some very positive feedback for us. They're used to dealing with damper units that cost £3000+ EACH, with no extra hardware (just a damper), so for them to come back positive is a big plus. We'll have a write up on our visit to Penske shortly. :)

Other than waiting on feedback, this group buy seems like a no brainer to me

Well they are on but they have just been fitted out of the box. :( They have left the kit for me to adjust but thats no good for me as I don't know what I'm doing. I'm going to have to get it sorted by Paul at ZEN. For my needs I think the 8/6kgs spring rates would of been much better. The 6/4kgs is softer than my JDM setup and will probably be great for most cars but with my power level I don't think its the best choice. I'm dropping the car off at stevens at the weekend hopefully so he should be able to give a better opinion of them as he will know what he is doing for adjustments :D


I have just took the car for a quick drive and out of the box there does seem to be a definate improvement. It feels easier to accelerate thru the gears and only hold the steering wheel with one hand which is usually a pain due to all the torque steer. Even on a bumpy country road I backed off accelrating on my STI suspension at just over 5krpm where as now it seemed easier to to virtually redline the car. I think with 8/6 spring rates and good tweak on the suspension the car will be totally different. A big test for my car will be on 31st August where the car will be 1/4 miled and this should eliminate a lot of the front end lift I get on launch.

The 6/4 setup is a stiffer spring rate than the OEM JDM STi setup, it's just testament to the damper setup that it feels softer. :)

Hopefully the garage that fitted them will have at least followed the instructions and set them up a LITTLE? Since they're not "preset" to a specific length, spring preload or damping setting out of the box!

If they followed the instructions then you'll be on full soft on the dampers, which will put the ride fairly soft, I'd suggest somewhere in the middle of the range of the dampers (so 6-10 clicks in) would give you what you're looking for!

Let me know if you feel you need the stiffer setup, since your car is predominantly road use and 1/4 mile I still think that properly set up the 6/4 setup will be perfect for you, but if it ends up that you want stiffer then we'll sort it out of course! :)

Let me know how you get on once they're set up, feel free to have a play with the damping it's really easy, if you take a peek under the car you'll see the green adjustment knobs at the bottom of the strut. :)

Ben i had Steve doing this last night, and he says he couldnt see the green adjusters, hence my earlier question.

Are they at the very bottom of the strut?

Are the adjusters on from factory, or are they like the AST's where you add them on once installed?

Whats the range of clicks from soft to hard?

I will be seeing Steve at the weekend, so they wont get tweaked till then. Although i suspect that he will need the stronger springs, but will reserve judgement until we have tried them out.

They need to be installed, there's a little bag with the spanners and adjuster knobs with an allen key to secure them with the grub screw. :)

There are 17 total positions available, so you start at zero, then 16 clicks. Due to the fact that the 'clicker' is purely to count the number of turns and nothing to do with the mechanical adjustment (which is a rotating valve) sometimes the softest and/or hardest setting is very borderline on actually getting a click, just cycle it from full hard to full soft to get a feel for if it's just on the brink of clicking another step or not. :)

I'll get a pair of 8kg/mm springs out in the post today, if you end up not needing them, great, just send them back, if you do, then you have them there to use. On the 4kg setup it uses a 250mm free length spring to give the travel required for the softer sprung setup, but for the 6kg rear you can run the 200mm spring off the front, and use a new 200mm 8kg for the rear.

Yup saw those adjusters and they have not been fitted as they are still in the bag in the car :(

Steve dropped the car off at mine at 5pm yesterday, so the intention is for me to drive it to the office a few times (90 round trip) and play with the damper settings, and go from there.

Will hopefully have the first trip in it tomorrow.

At the moment we've got 5 confirmed deposits so it's £650, I'll update the list with names shortly. I've had about 6 phone calls about them today though so I don't see why it can't go up to at least 10+, but of course HSD is a new name to the Subaru market so it's a difficult initial step...!

If it drops down to £560, Im in! MY06 Spec C, I need long adjusters for rear seats & 6/4 springs as the Spec C is very light at the back.

ps if you twist my arm, Il be in at £600 if we cant get 20 orders!

There are only 7 days to get our deposits in & we have'nt had a scoobynetter ever use them or review them yet, though Im sure Steve soon will. I would suggest that if we could have maybe a week or two longer after Steve's review before closing the offer, then that will give more people time to see & decide based on the review. The more people that show interest will bring down the price & the more will want to buy. There are a few on here, including myself that would go for it then, if price fell to at least £600 / 10 sets.
