Whats that noise?? video inside....

i had a camcorder today, to thought i would get the noise recoreded.

the wineing sound has been there since i got the car back, it is not the sound of the air filter

, it happens all the time when on boost, i dont hear it on off boost driving.

happens in low and high boost.

any ideas on what it could be??

Excellent quality video (good camera :) ) but I've got no idea what that could be. Very strange.

monkeyboy173 21 June 2009 07:42 PM

Im not 100% sure but could it be a slightly loose clamp on a boost hose? It may look and feel tight but under boost its just leaking causing a whistle?:wonder:

Ian 21 June 2009 07:45 PM

I have checked all of the top ones i can get to, and they are all good, next i have got to take the bumper off to check.

but would the mapper notice this as i still have the maf sensor, and the air going into the engine would be different to what the maf reads?

monkeyboy173 21 June 2009 08:18 PM

I dont know Im not that good with the technical mapping stuff but it would only have to be a slight leak to make a high pitch sound like that I imagine?

slow connection tonight so waiting on it to load, either exhaust leak (the gasket buzzes like when you blow on a piece of grass between thumb and finger) or intercooler pipe leak - perhaps a clamp is tight as it is at the extent of it's limit rather than tight on the pipe.
If it is a small leak like this then it is unlikely to be noticed whne mapping other than the noise which they may or may not have noticed or it wasn't leaking then..
either way it should be checked

having listenned to vid now it sounds more like vac hose or intercooler leak than exhaust buzz gasket leak.

Simon

PS: what time did you run?

Ian 21 June 2009 10:04 PM

i got a 12.8 @ 111 mph

the best time i have had at the pod is a 12.2

ill have another look over the pipes tomorrow, could it be a inlet manifold gasket? as they were not in the best of condition

Jolly Green Monster 21 June 2009 10:06 PM

yes could be inlet manifold gaskets

Ian 21 June 2009 10:11 PM

i better get some new ones of them tomorrow, and see if that helps

any ideas on my other thread about the apexi commander simon?

Jolly Green Monster 21 June 2009 10:13 PM

I guess the bulb or is it an led behind the liquid crystal display has gone..

never taken one apart.. I have a couple of ones here, so can sell you one if needed, no idea if the bulb / led is replaceable.

i think they have l.e.d down the side, as remember seeing 3 or 4 down each side, but they have all gone out.

is there any way of turning them on or off?

Jolly Green Monster 21 June 2009 10:29 PM

only the brightness..

would be worth checking it is plugged in fully as it would have been unplugged by mapper etc..

From the video there it sounds like the exhaust gasket as Simon described.
What video cam is that you use?

today,i ran with out the bov, and the noise was still there.

with the apexi avcr turned off, i could not really make the noise out

on low boost you can hear it (1.05 bar// 1.1 on avcr)
on hight boost you can hear it well (1.5ish// 1.6 on avcr)

Ian 25 June 2009 04:33 PM

have put new inlet manifold gaskets, and throttle body gaskets on and the noise is still there.

have tried it with no bov, noise still there.

checked the top 2 intercooler pipes, all clampted up good, hoses all look/feel fine.

i havent checked the fmic pipes behind the bumper, but these have not been off.

anyone got any more ideas???

Jolly Green Monster 25 June 2009 05:14 PM

uppipe gasket

Ian 25 June 2009 05:31 PM

will have a look.

went to mocom racing yesterday to get the gaskets, and he had a listen to the noise, and thought it was boost related.

im running the gt spec 3 bolt gaskets, would it more likele be the 3 bolt one, or the up pipe to turbo?

you start to hear it when you get to over .8 bar boost

Hobstar82 25 June 2009 06:12 PM

Have you checked to see if your inlet manifold is cracked or even worped on the flanges or if you have a split in your intercooler or metal boost pipes? Could be hair line crack which only opens up under boost therefore a tw@ to find when visually inspecting! Could be why its so high pitched!!

Ian 25 June 2009 06:22 PM

the intercooler, is new and only done around 2k miles, i had a look for any cracks/splits in the inlet, but could not find any

Ian 25 June 2009 09:15 PM

been out this afternoon, jcaked up car, the 3bolt up pipe lookes good, with no exhaust soot marks etc, been over the fmic pipes again, and hoses, all look good.

next thing turbo.....

Scotsman 25 June 2009 10:05 PM

Sounds like we both might have the same problem :(

My noise isn't exactly the same as yours - but not a million miles off. Mine comes on only when on high boost and full throttle. Started have way through a track session.
