Trout... 03 March 2002 03:07 PM

A thread started here recently asking what modification paths for what sort of money.

Well just as a reference I thought I would answer the original question and see if others were willing to do the same.

Result - 346bhp, 300lb/ft torque

Cost - around four large, because I went the expensive route - big cost item was the Turbo - other bits, ECU, Exhaust, Intercooler, W/I and Injectors. Car running sweetly in this state of tune for over 10k miles, including over 500 on track.

Estimate that for ten large from scratch that 400bhp would be the minimum target without NOS. Instructions available from here!

Would need a stronger gearset and clutch though once over 350bhp and 350lb/ft of torque.

Trout ;)

PS what did you get Andy - you probably spent even less than me ;):p

EvilBevel 03 March 2002 03:16 PM

I think I'm going to stay out of this thread if you don't mind :D ;)

got any stickers must be worth a few bhp :D.

Dont know but 1.3 bar I would have thought at least 300 probably nearer 330-340

Trout... 03 March 2002 10:49 PM

Well this is interesting - looks like 340bhp is easily available this side of five large. Mind you I wish I had gone for the rebuild to put in special conrods that only work up to 1.8bar ;)

SAM - I reckon with 1.1bar at 7,000 rpm you might just get 300bhp - it depends on how much air your turbo flows.

Any more suggestions ;):D

Trout :D

SecretAgentMan 03 March 2002 10:59 PM

I'm going internal as soon as my budget recovers (will it ever? :D ), I'm thinking JE pistons and steel rods.

Does anyone know how much abuse an open deck block will take?

Cheers!

/J - isn't it wonderful when powerdiscussions can be had without harsh language? :D

Trout... 03 March 2002 11:13 PM

Jerry,

it would be a tough one to call - I am considering going the same route - but want 2bar so closed/semi-closed would seem to be a good idea. Also when it is open good time to port the heads.

Mr. Trowt,

I smell somethink fishy hear. Are you making fun of sumone ?

Why does all of you get good bhp, but not very good torque, is there a problem with the ecu's, or the UK tuner ?? I bet it wasn't tdi, was it, haha

polarbearit 03 March 2002 11:38 PM

If anyone can give me some advice over here, I'd be interested...

You're right Carlos, it couldn't have been.

Trouts power is proven on road and track with no BS.

Know what I mean?

:p

Scooby370beast 04 March 2002 12:23 AM

Trout,

IS this how you will eat my scoob alive? 300lb? Do you know maths?

Trout... 04 March 2002 01:06 AM

Sorry 370Beast - who are you? I started this post for serious tuners to share their personal and real experiences of tuning the Subaru engine and what sort of mods they have.

I am not sure that I would want to eat your car - simply that it would probably taste quite nasty. Oh, and by the way I am very good at maths thank you.

So if you have some real, personal experiences to share then please join the conversation - otherwise ta ta for now!

Trout :D

Trout... 04 March 2002 01:14 AM

Carlos,

how dare you - I'll have you know I was the tuner in this case. And the torque figure was the highest on the day against some very serious Scoobs, including some with NITRUX.

What I don't do is fiddle with the boost control to get artificial overboost to get a RR figure as the settings are not compatable with road driving or track driving.

I would prefer not to take my car to TDI - someone else posted here recently and they spent ten large just to get 340bhp, poor souls - also he said he needed a second rebuild to get his car over 1.8bar. I hope that wasn't the tuners doing? I can't imagine how disappointed I would be to have to replace my conrods twice!

Trout

Scooby370beast 04 March 2002 01:18 AM

I didnt spend 10k just on the engine.Lots was labour clutch, flywheel etc etc.Carlos is a bit right I had last year 321 lbs with 1.2 bar.F-CON is very good for that.Cheers

Trout... 04 March 2002 01:26 AM

CraigH 04 March 2002 09:54 AM

Thought your mate rebuilt it?

You said TDI didn't cos you wouldn't pay the labour rate?

Or have I missed something and just got another waft of BS?

:D

Scooby370beast 04 March 2002 10:01 AM

You really can't read my mate is the mechanic for TDI dick.He did it at his garage(home). You really can't read

Mo 04 March 2002 11:29 AM

I'd be your mate if you gave me £14k.

Jay m A 04 March 2002 02:27 PM

Hi

I'd just like to add to this thread at the lower end of the tuning scale.

I started off with a 260PS import, so I assume about 250BHP on UK fuel.

Full Scoobymania Exhaust, K+N panel filter and a Dawes MBC set to 1.0 bar.

Total cost new £650 but because I'm a bit of a scavenger I got it all for less than £500 :)
Anyway according to PE I've got 283BHP, so I've gained about 30BHP for my troubles.
Not figures to set this thread alight in terms of money and power ;) but the best bit about my budget tuning is that information costs nothing. I've had the pleasure of discussing online and meeting up with the likes of Andy Tang, Trout, Topcat, Danny, that man Lawson and others whose opinions and advice are greatly recieved (apart from the Dawes thing but hey I'm on a budget here ;):)).

In short we are all petrolhead enthusiasts and share a common goal of tuning our cars but it seems that of late there has been some threads started that really doesn't do anybody any favours :(.

There was post on another thread by DeepSingh that suggested that Craig, Trout etc should concentrate more of their posts on threads that welcome their views, opinions etc and help out newbie tuners rather than get involved in threads that are no more than 'mines bigger than yours' in nature. However, if it wasn't for the intervention of these threads by EB, SAM Craig Trout, then certain newbie tuners may well have taken poor advice.....

The SB370 threads are indeed interesting and hilarious entertainment to established scoobynetters but ultimately its a sad time for Scoobynet when these type of threads dominate the shop window :(

I was going to add this to the other thread but it was locked, sorry to intrude David.

Justin

robin ledger 04 March 2002 03:42 PM

here we go again....

why do these threads always get hijacked, then ruined by the usual suspects? please go away... :(

jewboy 04 March 2002 07:08 PM

Troat,
i dont know to much about the technical stuff ,oil and filter, brakes etc about my limited.I am thing about what to do next.I would be greatful of any info you or anyone else could give.
julian

just thought Andy Tang i think you came to horsham to buy my super dragger a while ago

Trout... 04 March 2002 11:41 PM

Justin,

this thread and the other one are to protect newbies from spending £14k on their car to get a handful of extra horses. This thread was to demonstrate that for less than five large big power can be achieved and how it was done.

Everyone else....

....320+lbs/ft of torque seems like an AWFUL lot from a 2l car running 1.2bar - is this possible or would you need a turbo the size of Wales?

Trout :D

R19KET 05 March 2002 12:21 AM

Trout,

I'm not certain how TDI's RR compares to PE's, so it's a little hard to say. 320ftlbs is certainly on the higher than expected side, but then we've seen 344bhp/309ftlbs from 1.25bar, on a UK car, and this was on a medium sized hybrid.

I don't know what size turbo 370 has, and it would have been nice to see a slightly more understandable dyno graph, and at what rpm max torque was acheived. It may well have been at high rpm, indicating a big turbo.

It's also possible that 1.2bar, refers to "boost held", and that some overboost was used to get the torque figure. Although I'm not certain if a Pro Pro Pro, allows overboost ?

I just know that my car (original STi engine) saw such varying torque figures (even saw 377ftlbs on one dyno, although that was with 1.7bar induced overboost :D that I don't doubt 370's claimed figures were run.

Trout, you could always take your car down to TDI for a power run, that may give you a better idea.

To be honest, we don't really know very much about 370's car, just that he runs an HKS F-Con, EVC Pro, etc', but no detail on the turbo, injectors, ect', so for now, it's just a guessing game.......

By the way, I thinking of starting a "301ftlb PLUS club" what do you reckon......:D ;)

Mark.

Slooby 05 March 2002 12:29 AM

Count me in for that club Mr. R19 ;)
