E39 M5 would you buy ?.

I have money burning a hole in my pocket at the moment, and heads all over the place with next car. Dramitically varying in budget from 10K-20K, and looking at cars from S2000's, E46 M3, Evo7,8,9, Hawkeye STI's, Elise's

But I'm now thinking about one of these to replace my E36 M3 Cab. I have no doubt it would be quicker and a very fast car. But I'm a little worried I might find it a little clunky, heavy and dare I say it, not that much fun for the type of driving I do.

This is a second car for predominantly me only to take me to and fro work a few miles each day, the odd business trip, but also double up that the 3 kids and wife can go in as well when we are not using are main family car. But in truth I doubt we would end up faffing about swapping kids seats etc. So largely this car is for me.

I like comfort and have done the Turbo Jap thing over and over so trying to get away from them this time, but I also like a car that is fun to drive and can zip about it. The 400 horses straight out of the box is a big draw, and I know a few have had them in here, and just looking for any thoughts on them as I just wonder if I would be jumping out of the pan and into the fire a bit.

I has also considered the E46 M3 coupe which is proportionally a nicer size and has a newer car feel to it, and I do wonder in real terms if the E46 M3 and the E39 M5 are much different in power. 343bhp E46 V's 400bhp for E39 in a heavier car, so probably not that much in it ? I've been in an test driven an E46 M3 but not been in a E39 M5.

If you can believe it, the few clips on You tube with the 2 back to back would suggest there ain't much in it up to say about 120mph.

Views and opinions on up-keep of one would be appreciate as well.

Thx

Doh - Should know better than to have tried the search facility first. Great thread and some good insight that pretty much answers all my questions. Thanks for the link.

I'm going to have to go an test drive one and see how I feel about it.

And add your opinion!

I think a facelift E39 M5 in Imola Red looks the absolute nuts... and even though I'm only 25 (and insurance could potentially tip into 4 figures again going by a quick quote on comparison site) its a car that I'm seriously considering when I jump into something worth a few quid again.

Cheers,
Grant
