Right, before we go off, this is not meant as an x vs y thread OK ?

Just that I was totally *AMAZED* to see the stopping power of the STi7 being beyond Porsche territory

For those of you who know the German magazine Sport Auto, I don't need to explain. For those who don't, let's just say that on the information side (not the writing style) the eat most other magazines for breakfast.

And yup, they did an EVO VII versus STI 7 this month

In these tests, they always measure stopping distances from 100 km/h to 0 (62 mph - O ) with both cold & warm discs.

The STi got pretty good numbers on the cold braking (37 something meters) ... but got an amazing 33. something meters with hot discs  That is more than 11 m/s2 which is really supercar league.

For comparison: the new 911 Carrera 4S (no one ever accused Porsche of having bad brakes) takes 35.7 meters (10.8 m/s2)

Whatever the arguments about the car, it seems that Subaru this time really listened to their customers.

For more numbers (stopping distance in meters): see the top 10 of all times on the cars they tested ...

1. Porsche 911 GT3 Cup 32,2
2. Porsche Boxster S 34,8
3. Porsche 911 GT3 35,4
4. Ferrari 360 Modena 35,7
5. Callaway C12 35,8
6. Porsche 911 Turbo (996) 36,1
Brabus CLK 5.8 36,1
Porsche GT2 (996) 36,1
Honda S 2000 36,1
Audi TT 1.8T quattro 36,1

So the STi would come second. Amazing, again.

Theo

PS: an incredible website to see real data like this (and you can be damned sure this info is in no way biased towards japanese cars ... is http://www.track-challenge.com/main.asp

harj 23 February 2002 06:37 PM

Thats very impressive Theo, at Prodrive live we couldn't really see how good the brakes were on the STI7 as the servo's were disconected, but once they warmed up and pushed the pedal down (HARD) they were impressive.

EvilBevel 23 February 2002 06:52 PM

Harj, yeah, but that was on Prodrive ground, so you might (if you are paranoid) suspect that they worked on the brakes etc etc... you know how people tend to doubt things.

But this is done by a mag that ordered standard cars, and although they admittedly LOVE the Impreza & the Evo, they would only possibly be accused of favoring Porsches etc (which they don't BTW )

What struck me is that dispite hundreds of posts on this BBS, loads of mags & TV reports, no one has mentioned this little fact.

Oh, and to put fuel to the fire... they *really* compare the cars, and yup, the EVO out of the box is the quicker better handling car by a small margin. Nothing that can not be sorted though with deleting a few cats, but a clear "winner" (based on measurements, not someone who has a thought or a preference) the EVO was nonetheless. (except for the brakes :D )

FreeT 23 February 2002 06:54 PM

What were the results for the evo?

EvilBevel 23 February 2002 06:55 PM

erm... double post :)

FreeT, I have to buy the mag on Monday to give you a totally accurate number (had a quick look at the dealer today) but I think there was a 4 meter difference between the two. That is a *lot*.

Don't forget the STi is a "heavy" car (all things considered)

I first thought it was a typo in their stats, but nope, they had a lot of praise for it in their comments as well.

Trout... 23 February 2002 07:09 PM

My subjective experience of the Sti VII was that the brakes were very good - and I have 6pot APs with DS2500 pads which are superb.

On the road they were comparable in capability - I certainly didn't miss any braking power - and this is in a car that is nearly 200kg heavier than mine.

Trout :D

EvilBevel 23 February 2002 07:40 PM

Thanks Trout, it seems your experiences are pretty much in line with the article... AP 6 pots with DS2500 are not exactly bad kit either (!), so to have the same stopping power (in feel) with 200 kg more ... like I said, amazing.

Sometimes I wished to see less opinion and more of these little facts on Scoobynet... </old fart mode>. Not meant as a dab towards other users, but seeing the STi stopping better than a 360 Modena, I would expect those things to be SHOUTED all over Scoobynet :(

Theo

PS: some more stats:

0-200 km/h Evo : 19.5 seconds
0-200 km/h STi : 23 seconds (don't you love those cats )

WREXY 23 February 2002 11:46 PM

Can STI VII brakes be fitted to early scoobs such as MY99/00? :D

Cheers,

Wrexy.

Evil

Thanks for heads up, will go and buy a copy of Sport Auto. Point regarding information content of this magazine is well made, and information content is the reason why I am reading 'ScoobyNet General' a lot less

Top comedy value from other road testers complaining about understeer where Horst finds none because he is so comitted to the corner and trail brakes deep in

Wrexy

Don't know what your budget is, and how much unsprung weight you want to run, but you should consider AP 4 Pots + Pagid Blue if you do a lot of track work. They also fit under standard 16 inch wheels

Andy W 24 February 2002 12:44 PM

Wrexy, I don't think they will as they will only fit under certain wheels (they will not fit under std wheels or P1 18inch wheels)

Andy

Trout... 24 February 2002 12:51 PM

AP 4-pots are excellent - but DS2500 pads are far superior than the Pagids - IMHO of track and road experience.

Trout :D

WREXY 24 February 2002 10:28 PM

Cheers Fellas. :)

ChrisB 24 February 2002 11:13 PM

Theo,

Are those GT3 stopping distances with the ultra-trick ceramic brake setup?

EvilBevel 25 February 2002 06:20 AM

Chris, digging into my memory (now there's reliable for ya  :) ) I'm pretty sure that the ceramic brakes actually scored lower (slightly bigger distance) than the "normal" ones, but this may have changed since that test last year.

Remembered this because I found it odd that these expensive jobbies did not actually shorten the stopping distance (but probably a lot more fade resistant, mind).

Will look up that article too later today.

EvilBevel 26 February 2002 10:59 AM

As promised, the more complete numbers:

Cold braking 62mph-0mph Evo : 37.1 meters / 10.4 m/s2
Cold braking 62mph-0mph STi : 36.7 meters / 10.5 m/s2
Warm braking 62mph-0mph Evo : 37.1 meters / 10.4 m/s2
Warm braking 62mph-0mph Sti : 33.8 meters / 11.4 m/s2
Warm braking 125mph-0mph Evo : 144.2 meters / 10.7 m/s2
Warm braking 124mph-0mph STi : 139.2 meters / 11.1 m/s2
Weight Evo : 1454 kg
Weight STi : 1484 kg

They both have brembo setups so obviously not all brembo 4 pots kits are the same.

Dracoro 26 February 2002 11:16 AM

So they think the evo brakes perform the same, regardless whether they are warm or cold. hmmmm, I'm suspicious.

EvilBevel 26 February 2002 11:24 AM

I agree, must be complete bollox then

chiark 26 February 2002 04:45 PM

Theo, I thought they were good on the test drive (especially the initial bite being much better than the Prodrive/AP 6 pots that I've tried) but blimey that's impressive!

RPG7 26 February 2002 06:19 PM

They did a test down here on the new M3, C32 AMG Merc and STi.
The STi also had the shortest stopping distance.

T5NYW 26 February 2002 08:13 PM

I took one for a test drive:D and wished I'd taken some sunglasses to stop my eyeballs touching the windscreen:rolleyes: impressive.
So i bought one 4 weeks to go:D:D:D:D:D:D:D as for Driven program spongy brakes:(:( and looks like you got to drive it hard:(:( what do think the right feet are for:rolleyes: whats her name Peannis Mallortw4t or something like that:eek:

Tony
