Ask the wife to agree to it if you get the cost to change down to £15k. Then offer £14k to the dealer and work from there, giving the excuse of the wife's reluctance. You'll have fun convincing the wife and the dealer.

I'm sorry but if it genuinely your money and not joint money then it's not her place to veto it. I'm not being old fashioned, just realistic. If the money was saved from your portion of the joint income and the payments are coming from your portion then it's your decision.
I'm lucky, though, MrsREV puts up with me buying ridiculous cars. |

Yoza - just seems like a good time. The money is earning sod all in interest anyway and I think the market is bottoming out. Plus the Astra will soon be worth 10p. Sadly (for now) we both wear matching pyjama bottoms it seems. |
You started off wrong - should have been "looking" at 58 reg 535s and drop in at every opportunity how nice they are, how perfect they would be, how much you want one and then after a couple of weeks - "look, I've been thinking about this new car and you're right, the 535 is too much right now. I've had look around and while it's not what I *really* think we should get, it would be a good *compromise* to get one of these 335s and slightly older, would save the family money too..."
Job done :D But as it's too late, play up the safety and residuals angles... |

Any clue as to why she doesn't want the car?
Is it the cost? [Could well be a local minimum right now, doom and gloom in the markets, savings likely to actually fall in value] Don't see the need for a new car at all? [You hate the Astra, right? It's making you miserable and life's too short not to spend the daily commute feeling miserable] Wants something different? [Can't really help that, but you're the one that'll be driving it most, right?] I swapped my '05 STI for a 330D three years ago and it was definitely one of my better decisions - I've not regretted it for a moment. If it came with a proper manual gearbox I'd have a 335D without hesitation. Good luck, let us know how you get on :) |
Andy - she thinks the Astra does the job fine (TBH it does do a decent job) but realises it will need to be replaced eventually. I don't hate the Astra, I just fancy something quick again. To some (not many!) the Astra is quite quick but not to me (or pretty much all of you on here!).
No arguments on the type of car though. As for the auto - they used that because apparently the manual might not be able to handle the torque - which makes it even more appealing to me! I'll keep on it though... |

I'm assuming your VAT registered? If so you can claim back £3k so the offer to take the wife away with the saving or just use it as an extra discount I'm claiming the VAT back on the Disco i've just bought, so it stands me at just over £10k |
Mamoon -we are VAT registered but in my limited experience putting the word "car" anywhere near the word "business" results in being battered to death by HM R&C! I may be wrong though...

nothing about safety/reliability etc. don't you think the 3 series would just be too small though- they are pokey little cars. I mean my wagon is good- but I admit its a small car and I really need a legacy/decent sized car in all honesty. £20K on a motor though----- if you have the cash- fair enough- but I'm from the school of buying "whatever" for pound notes and never ever ever borrowing to do so. especially for a car- thats just suicidal. |
Scoobychick - she is actually a bit of a petrolhead - she learned to drive in an N reg Scooby Wagon in the days when they were a bit "specialist" And took her test in a Landie Defender.
