Too late PH nerd...

Too late you cyber geek.

adehook 11 February 2009 06:09 PM

its safer to drive the new kid about in

john banks 11 February 2009 06:12 PM

Ask the wife to agree to it if you get the cost to change down to £15k. Then offer £14k to the dealer and work from there, giving the excuse of the wife's reluctance. You'll have fun convincing the wife and the dealer.

yoza 11 February 2009 06:12 PM

Who wears the pyjama bottoms in your house then ?

Sorry....

Seriously if its going to cause friction leave it until another time.

There will always be cars for sale, wait until the time is better for you wife.

NotoriousREV 11 February 2009 06:14 PM

I'm sorry but if it genuinely your money and not joint money then it's not her place to veto it. I'm not being old fashioned, just realistic. If the money was saved from your portion of the joint income and the payments are coming from your portion then it's your decision.

I'm lucky, though, MrsREV puts up with me buying ridiculous cars.

Matteeboy 11 February 2009 06:15 PM

John - could be a plan...

Yoza - just seems like a good time. The money is earning sod all in interest anyway and I think the market is bottoming out. Plus the Astra will soon be worth 10p.

Sadly (for now) we both wear matching pyjama bottoms it seems.

HankScorpio 11 February 2009 06:17 PM

You started off wrong - should have been "looking" at 58 reg 535s and drop in at every opportunity how nice they are, how perfect they would be, how much you want one and then after a couple of weeks - "look, I've been thinking about this new car and you're right, the 535 is too much right now. I've had look around and while it's not what I *really* think we should get, it would be a good *compromise* to get one of these 335s and slightly older, would save the family money too..."

Job done :D

But as it's too late, play up the safety and residuals angles...

yoza 11 February 2009 06:19 PM

Safety for all the family....rated high.

Take her for a test drive in it, she might fall in love. :luvlove:

I SO much want to put a deposit on it then buy it this weekend - got the cash in the bank - but wife is vetoing me.

Buggery buggery bugger. I might go and vandalise (in a reversible way) the Ashtray and say "look - it's broken/dangerous/unreliable."

Any other ideas for persuasion anyone? Seems too good an offer to miss.

Before any old fashioned blokes say "ignore her" we are very much an equal when it comes to money - we are both directors of a company that she set up but she's on maternity leave and I currently earn all the money. And have got loads of extra business in recently.

HELP!

Get her to drive the BM and 'feel' it. talk to her about the good ecomony, it being a decent price and not likely to drop a lot more, grest cruiser for long journeys, safe and reliable- lotta car for the money, you only live once, etc.

Besides, the old car is a ashtray ffs!

Nat 11 February 2009 06:33 PM

Crash the Astra on some snow/ice (You may have missed a trick on this if it's all gone). New car needed, job's a goodun :)

NotoriousREV 11 February 2009 06:33 PM

OK, let's cut to the chase. You could have 3 arguments: 1) Im thinking of buying a new car 2) I've found a car I like 3) I want to buy that car

Or you could have 1 argument 1) I've bought a car

Very good point!

Walk away and wait until the end of the month, new reg desperation to shift ever more depreciating stock, the part ex will not really drop anymore and has less to fall anyway ;)

All unless you negotiate a better deal of course.

J4CKO 11 February 2009 08:11 PM

Mine's the same, Astra's arent so bad :D

hodgy0_2 11 February 2009 08:23 PM

just withhold all sex -- until she caves in

c'mon man -- pull your self together, works for me everytime!!!

AndyC_772 11 February 2009 08:52 PM

Any clue as to why she doesn't want the car?

Is it the cost? [Could well be a local minimum right now, doom and gloom in the markets, savings likely to actually fall in value]

Don't see the need for a new car at all? [You hate the Astra, right? It's making you miserable and life's too short not to spend the daily commute feeling miserable]

Wants something different? [Can't really help that, but you're the one that'll be driving it most, right?]

I swapped my '05 STI for a 330D three years ago and it was definitely one of my better decisions - I've not regretted it for a moment. If it came with a proper manual gearbox I'd have a 335D without hesitation.

Good luck, let us know how you get on :)

Matteeboy 11 February 2009 09:52 PM

Andy - she thinks the Astra does the job fine (TBH it does do a decent job) but realises it will need to be replaced eventually. I don't hate the Astra, I just fancy something quick again. To some (not many!) the Astra is quite quick but not to me (or pretty much all of you on here!).
No arguments on the type of car though.

As for the auto - they used that because apparently the manual might not be able to handle the torque - which makes it even more appealing to me!

I'll keep on it though...

mamoon2 11 February 2009 10:07 PM

Matteeboy,

I'm assuming your VAT registered? If so you can claim back £3k so the offer to take the wife away with the saving or just use it as an extra discount

I'm claiming the VAT back on the Disco i've just bought, so it stands me at just over £10k

Matteeboy 12 February 2009 09:41 AM

Mamoon -we are VAT registered but in my limited experience putting the word "car" anywhere near the word "business" results in being battered to death by HM R&C! I may be wrong though...

davegtt 12 February 2009 09:44 AM

:lol1: I love this. All this cr@p youve spouted about wasting money on property so you chuck it away on vehicles instead :D

Your wife sounds like the one with the head screwed on :lol1:

I didn't think second hand cars were subject to VAT anyway?

my old man's advice to me was "buy the most expensive house you can afford and the cheapest car you can get away with"

and tbh it stood me in pretty good stead, we have a very very good income but I wouldn't spend more than 5k on a car, but have property worth pre crash 1million, post crash 750/800K (and b4 you ask with over 60% equity)

dont be tempted with "shiny things"

Scoobychick 12 February 2009 10:34 AM

I do feel a bit sorry for all you car loving blokes whose wimmins only see them as tin boxes to get from A to B in. I'm the polar opposite, if I was married and my husband bought an Astra I'd probably divorce him, or at least get him psychiatric help ;) :D

The faster and more ridiculous, the better for me :king:

austinwrx 12 February 2009 10:44 AM

you're screwed mate- my gf just see's cars by how they look or their colour.

nothing about safety/reliability etc.

don't you think the 3 series would just be too small though- they are pokey little cars.

I mean my wagon is good- but I admit its a small car and I really need a legacy/decent sized car in all honesty.

£20K on a motor though----- if you have the cash- fair enough- but I'm from the school of buying "whatever" for pound notes and never ever ever borrowing to do so. especially for a car- thats just suicidal.

Matteeboy 12 February 2009 10:52 AM

Scoobychick - she is actually a bit of a petrolhead - she learned to drive in an N reg Scooby Wagon in the days when they were a bit "specialist" And took her test in a Landie Defender.
She was very keen on the R32 and other quickish motors I've had.

Dave - thanks for your helpful input...

davegtt 12 February 2009 10:59 AM

No problem, glad to be of service :thumb:

Gordo 12 February 2009 11:00 AM

just buy it. my missus couldn't believe I bought a speed boat when we lived in Scotland even though she thought it a daft idea. and even worse that we'd had it for 6 weeks before she found out :)

that excursion now means I'm at liberty to do what I want as she's resigned to it. go on son, be a man!

Matteeboy 12 February 2009 11:14 AM

Gordo - good work!

It was Mrs Matt that suggested we needed our speedboat...

Dr.No 12 February 2009 12:26 PM

Nah, you don't want a 56 plate 335d touring...

Get this instead: Dark blue 07 plate 740i, hide, toys, etc. - with 3000 miles on the clock:

Autoquake Used BMW 740i For Sale 24/7 / LB07KEK Plate - Petrol - Automatic

A huge amount of car for a silly amount of money! Quite frightening really...

DN

Matteeboy 12 February 2009 12:32 PM

Bit on the large side!
Funnily enough I test drove the 750i for the Independent. Great car but total tech overload.
