If it's only in cold weather then there was a service bulletin for your age of car to replace the fuel pipes on the inlet manifold.

Timur 008 11 December 2008 06:15 PM

ahh... possible!? thanks for your quick reply:notworthy

bugeyeandy 11 December 2008 06:16 PM

No problem, here's my thread from when I had to do the job on my car

https://www.scoobynet.com/general-te...ell-issue.html

Hope it helps. Before you dive into this though, it's worth checking all the connections around the fuel filter (next to the battery).

Superb! i will do;)
ps. i notice the smell most when i have the air coming from the heaters when on & the air circulation from outside is on - when i do it so the air is cut off from outside & have interior air circulation on it seems to die down... not sure if yours was the same?

bugeyeandy 11 December 2008 06:31 PM

Yep, mine was the same as it draws air from just below the windscreen outside.
It only happened in very cold weather and only really noticable when stationary or at lower speeds.

I was dubious changing the fuel pipes would fix it but it did :)

I recon its is your injectors m8t had that sort of prob on my motor. try checking them :->

Mine has done a similar thing in this cold weather we have had lately. How much where the replacement pipes bugeyeandy?

bugeyeandy 11 December 2008 08:27 PM

I think it was about £60 or £70 for the whole lot including inlet manifold gaskets. The small rubber hose is about £15 from the dealer but it's just a piece of fuel hose :cuckoo:

I did pour injector cleaner the other day as it goes.. & it did start to smell then! not sure what to do now?? my car is a 51 plate STI & done 79k as Andys started to make a smell around the same sort of mileage..

Cheaper than I was expecting. Not paying £15 for a small hose :nono: ill borrow some fuel hose from work instead :lol1: Cheers for the help

Common problem with these models. I have exactly the same symptoms as you describe. Will have mine done by a mechanic as there's no way I'm competent enough to carry out the works. May have some manifold spacers fitted at the same time me thinks.
