Got some AP's and need them fitted. Is there anyone out there qualified to do it or can someone recommend a place near to me in Kent?

Luke 15 February 2002 10:08 PM

Contact Steve Lawson. Try to get his number.... or leave a mesage for him in "General"

But hey in 11 hours I get me Prodrive STI yippeeeeee

ChrisB 15 February 2002 10:41 PM

To me, AP = AP Racing 4 or 6 pot brakes.

Anyone can fit them......

I got my 'local' garage (read 2 miles away and not a Subaru dealer - charge was about £20-25 per hr inclusive)to do them for £100! (Inc Vat)

it took them a while with the shims but they got there in the end and I was pleased with the results other than I had to have the wheels rebalanced as there was no room for the weights on the inside of the 16 inch wheels!

AP 4 pots, + front and rear braided hoses

Task is simple for pretty much any garage - and you dont need a specialist at all... the choice is yours

I dare steve Lawson will do a good job and is much cheaper than the Subaru dealers out there if you live near Croydon/Gatwick area

Colin Berry 16 February 2002 12:54 PM

Unfortunately, Steve was my first choice but he is moving from his premises and is off to BMW hence he has no time to do the work :(

SecretAgentMan 16 February 2002 01:14 PM

...guys...it's actually silly easy to do...the only minor fiddles are the shims (U need to get the disc in the middle of the caliper - not that big a deal), and to bleed the system - if you're 2 it's not an issue either...those suction thingys should be available at the closest Halfords.

I wouldn't trust Halfords to fit a windscreen wiper ;)

Maddog 17 February 2002 10:00 PM

Why do they need shims?
Do they not make kits to fit specific applications then?

Hoppy 18 February 2002 03:36 AM

MD, the reason you need shims is not because of AP Racing - it's because the standard Subrau brake mounts are not always exactly where they're supposed to be...

Richard.

Edited to add that fitting brakes is not difficult. Any competant workshop should be able to do it. Key points are to make sure the mating surfaces are clean and true and not rusty (wire brush on drill required). Also, if you're filling with fresh fuid and/or fitting new hoses, brakes may need bleeding a couple of times to get all air out.
